Paragraph 1

The geography club at Maple School prepared a guide for visitors to a community hall. The students used a fictional town map in which one centimeter represented two hundred meters of walking route. Unlike a straight-line distance between two points, the lines on their map followed actual paths and streets in the imaginary town. The school was marked S, and the destination, the hall, was marked H. Two routes had been drawn on the map, a blue route and a green route. The teacher asked the students to calculate the distances before recommending either one. She also warned them that a shorter route was not always suitable for everyone. A clear guide needed to show where each path went and whether stairs, roadwork, or temporary closures might affect a visitor’s choice.

Paragraph 2

The blue route led from the school to a park, then to a museum, and finally to the hall. The three sections measured two centimeters, three centimeters, and one and a half centimeters on the map. The students added them to get six and a half centimeters, which represented one thousand three hundred meters. The green route passed through a station instead. Its first section, from the school to the station, measured four centimeters, and the second section, from the station to the hall, measured three centimeters. The green route was therefore seven centimeters, or one thousand four hundred meters. One student said that the blue route was shorter by one hundred meters. The teacher agreed with the calculation but asked whether the group had checked the conditions of both paths.

Paragraph 3

When the students inspected the routes, they learned that the blue path included twenty steps near the museum. The green path was slightly longer, but it had no steps and used a level entrance to the hall. The group realized that visitors who needed a step-free route could not simply be directed along the shortest path. A second notice reported that part of the blue route would be closed on Thursday from one to four in the afternoon for maintenance. The green route would remain open during that time. One student suggested printing only the blue route because it was shorter on ordinary days. Another objected that the guide was meant to help people who might arrive at different times and have different needs. The group decided to include both routes and the temporary closure.

Paragraph 4

On Wednesday, the club prepared a trial version of the guide. It said, ‘Blue is the fastest route for all visitors.’ The teacher found two errors in this sentence. First, the students had measured distances, not travel times. Without information about how quickly a person could walk, they could not prove which path was fastest. Second, the word ‘all’ ignored people who could not use the steps and those arriving during the Thursday closure. The students changed the text to say, ‘The blue route is one hundred meters shorter than the green route, but it includes steps and is temporarily closed on Thursday afternoon.’ They added, ‘The green route is step-free and remains open during the closure.’ This version gave readers facts they could use without promising an outcome that had not been measured.

Paragraph 5

The final guide included a small table with distances, the number of steps, and the temporary closure period. It also gave visitors a simple instruction: check the latest notice before leaving the school, because maintenance times might change. The club did not label one route as universally better. Instead, it explained when the shorter path could be used and when the step-free path might be more suitable. During a class presentation, one student remarked that the map had not become more complicated simply because it contained more details. It had become more useful because the details answered real questions that visitors would ask. The teacher agreed and reminded the class that good English reading means noticing qualifications such as ‘only,’ ‘unless,’ and ‘during,’ not just copying the largest number or the shortest distance.

Paragraph 1

Paragraph 2

Paragraph 3

Paragraph 4

Paragraph 5
