2. 「Town to Open New Center」は今後の予定を表すことが多い。to不定詞を過去の出来事として訳さない。

3. 「New Bridge Completed」のようにbe動詞を省略した受動表現がある。本文で「was completed」など実際の時制を確認する。

4. 見出しは冠詞や補助語を省くことが多い。本文と対照して、出来事の発生日時・発表日時・予定日を別々に読む。

独自例文・和訳

School Opens New Library|学校が新図書館を開設(具体的な日時は本文で確認)。

Town to Repair Old Bridge|町が古い橋を修理する予定。

Exhibition Canceled After Storm|嵐の後、展示が中止に(受動のbeが省略され得る)。

問題A|文脈選択12問

Q1. Headline: ‘Town to Build New Park.’ The action is most likely (planned for the future / confirmed as finished).

Q2. Headline: ‘New Gate Installed.’ The likely omitted auxiliary is (was / will).(設置済みの報道)

Q3. Headline: ‘Council Approves Plan.’ This headline alone does (not / always) prove that approval is happening right now.

Q4. Headline: ‘Museum to Open in May.’ It says the opening is (expected / already completed).

Q5. Headline: ‘Students Awarded Prizes.’ The students are (receiving / giving) prizes.

Q6. Headline: ‘Bus Route Changes Monday.’ We must read the article to tell whether Monday refers to (the effective date / an article title).

Q7. Headline: ‘Report Released.’ The best expansion in a past-event article is ‘The report (was released / released itself).’

Q8. Headline: ‘City Not to Close Garden.’ The main meaning is that closure is (not planned / already complete).

Q9. ‘School Finds Old Map’ uses a simple present form, yet its article says the map was found yesterday. The correct time is (yesterday / tomorrow).

Q10. Headline: ‘Two Classes Selected.’ This is most naturally (passive / imperative).

Q11. Headline: ‘Officials to Meet Friday.’ The meeting is (scheduled / confirmed completed).

問題C|独自初見Read

A school journalism club prepared three short English headlines for its website. The first was ‘Library Opens New Room.’ In the article, however, the opening had taken place on Tuesday, two days before the story was published. The second was ‘Town to Repair Bridge.’ The body explained that the repair was scheduled for next month and had not started yet. The third was ‘Historical Photo Found.’ It described a photograph discovered during an archive check and used a passive expression without the verb ‘was’ in the headline. One student translated all three headlines as events happening at the moment of reading. The editor corrected this. A headline may summarize a recent event, a future plan, or a completed passive action. Readers must check the article’s full sentences and dates before deciding exactly when something happened.

The teacher warned students not to confuse a headline’s present tense with the present time of an event.

A28. 3人。 three students had received prizes。

A29. 前週末。 the previous weekend。

A30. 見出しの現在形=出来事が今起きている、と決めつけること。 not to confuse … present tense with present time。

A31. The school opened a new hall. 報道の現在形を通常叙述の過去形に直す。

A32. Students were given certificates. be動詞の省略を復元。

A33. 部活がウェブサイトを開設する予定である。 見出しのto不定詞は未来の予定。

A34. Wins 見出しでは最近の過去を現在形で表す。

A35. Students given prizes means they received prizes. givenは受動なので生徒が受け取る側。

A36. Team to Visit Museum Next Week 主語+to不定詞の未来見出し。通常文ならThe team is going to visit …。
