結論
joinは団体に入る・活動に加わる、attendは会議や授業に出席する、participate inは活動へ参加する、belong toは団体の所属メンバーであることを表します。入会・出席・積極的参加・所属はそれぞれ異なります。joinとattendの直後に不要な前置詞を付けないことも重要です。

使い分けの4原則
1. join the club / join the meeting：団体への加入や活動への合流。join in a discussionは使えるがjoin the clubにinは不要。
2. attend the class / attend a meeting：出席する。attend to a problemは『対処する』という別構文。
3. participate in＋活動：participate in a survey / participate in a debate。inが必要。
4. belong to＋組織・人など：belong to the school club（所属する）。belong to him（所有物である）という別の意味もある。

Miki joined the school debate club in April and still belongs to it. On Tuesday, she attended a training meeting but did not speak because she had a sore throat. On Thursday, she participated in a practice debate and presented two arguments. Her friend Sota attended the event as a visitor but did not join the club. At the end of the month, the club counted eighteen members, although twenty-six people had attended its open meeting.
