結論:生物多様性を扱う英語の長文では、sightings(目撃・観察回数)、individuals(個体数)、species(種の数)、observation effort(観察に費やした時間など)を区別します。

1 The biology club observed insects in a school garden.

2 The first survey lasted sixty minutes.

3 Eleven sightings were recorded in the first survey.

4 The second survey lasted only thirty minutes.

5 Five sightings were recorded in the second survey.

6 The observations were not made under identical conditions.

7 A single insect may be seen more than once.

8 The number of observed species was four in the first survey.

9 Lower counts do not necessarily establish a population decline.

10 The students proposed a more consistent observation schedule.

正答:No.

正答:No.

正答:No.

Original Reading: A high school biology club created a small garden to encourage students to observe insects and local plants. Its first survey took place on a sunny Thursday afternoon. Two students watched the same flower bed for sixty minutes, recorded eleven insect sightings, and recognized four different species. The following week, heavy clouds and light rain shortened their observation period to thirty minutes. This time, they recorded only five sightings and identified three species. A student wrote that the garden had lost more than half its insects in one week. The adviser questioned that conclusion. The observation period had been cut in half, and the weather was different. When the team expressed each count as sightings per hour, the first rate was eleven and the second was ten. Those figures were much closer than the raw counts of eleven and five. Even this adjusted comparison had limits, because insects might behave differently in rain or at different times of day. The group also noticed that a yellow butterfly may have returned to the same flowers several times. Recording it three times did not prove that three different butterflies had been present. The adviser explained that the number of observed species was a useful piece of information but not a complete measurement of all biodiversity in the area. Some species might be hidden or active at other hours. The students revised the report to say that they had observed fewer sightings during the second session, rather than claiming that the garden’s insect population had collapsed. For the next survey, they planned to observe for sixty minutes at the same time of day, record weather conditions, and take photographs when possible. They also proposed repeating the observations over several weeks before drawing conclusions about long-term changes. The project became a lesson in the difference between what researchers counted and what they hoped to understand.

16 What weather was reported for the first survey? Answer: Sunny weather.

17 What changed during the second survey besides the number of sightings? Answer: The duration and the weather.

18 Why was the claim that the insect population had halved unsupported? Answer: Observation conditions differed, and sightings were not counts of unique insects.

19 What might explain repeated sightings of a yellow butterfly? Answer: The same butterfly may have returned several times.

20 What improvement was planned for future observations? Answer: Sixty-minute sessions at the same time, weather records, and repeated surveys.
