  • Read & Think:
  • Critical Writing Training:

A museum is considering labels in multiple languages. What should it measure before concluding that visitors understand exhibits better?

Pre-Reading|

A fictional science museum introduced exhibit labels in three languages for a six-week pilot. The old labels had used only one language, while the new labels also featured larger print and a shorter introduction. The museum hoped that visitors would feel more comfortable exploring unfamiliar scientific ideas. It made the longer explanations available through printed guides instead of deleting them.

Staff invited eighty visitors to complete an optional survey. Fifty returned a form, and thirty-five of those respondents preferred the new labels. A volunteer said that this result proved that seventy percent of all visitors had learned more. The curator disagreed. Thirty-five out of fifty was indeed seventy percent, but it described a preference among respondents, not a measured improvement in comprehension. The museum also did not know whether people who declined the survey held similar views.

Another question concerned the cause of the preference: visitors might have liked the extra languages, the larger type, or the shorter introduction. Since these features had changed together, the pilot could not isolate the influence of translation. Before permanent adoption, the curator proposed separate comprehension tasks and a comparison of different label designs. The writer of the museum report recommended continuing the experiment while making only claims supported by the observations.

A fictional high school wanted to improve its after-school programme. In the autumn term, students could choose from six workshops, including coding, theatre and local history. The following spring, the school offered sixteen options. The two terms had different student groups, and several new instructors joined the programme at the same time.

The office recorded ninety enrolment forms in autumn and one hundred and twenty in spring. Some students applied for more than one workshop, so the number of forms did not identify distinct participants. A committee member argued that adding ten choices had increased student participation by thirty. The principal pointed out that the difference was between application forms, not confirmed attendance, and that the school had not counted how many individual students took part in either term.

A feedback survey also suggested that not everyone welcomed the larger list. Some respondents liked having specialised topics, while others reported spending longer comparing options. The school did not ask all eligible students, and it had not measured actual decision time. The writer concluded that offering more options might help some learners, but a better evaluation would track unique enrolments, attendance and access for students whose schedules limited their choices.

A student club uses photographs to monitor coastal wildlife. What could make photo counts misleading?

Pre-Reading|

A fictional student science club visited two parts of a coastal marsh on six mornings. Its members took photographs whenever they thought they saw small crabs moving across the mud. They recorded eighty-two photographs at site A and sixty-three at site B. Several members assumed that the first site supported nineteen more crabs, but the teacher questioned that conclusion.

One crab could appear in several photographs, and visibility differed because the sites had different amounts of grass. The teams also used cameras with different zoom settings. The project therefore counted photographs of possible crabs, not identified individual animals. Moreover, the club did not record how many crabs were hidden from view at either location. The teacher asked students to keep their observation and their population estimate separate.

To improve the next study, the club planned to standardise camera settings, choose comparable observation periods and consult a wildlife specialist about individual identification. It would also record weather and water conditions. The report writer supported the project as a way to learn observation skills, but refused to claim that the photographs alone established the population difference between the sites.

A school considers lending laptops for project work. What should it measure to decide whether the service is fair?

Pre-Reading|

A fictional high school launched a short-term laptop-lending service for students working on group projects. The aim was to provide temporary access for those who could not bring a suitable device from home. In the first three weeks, the school received sixty-eight loan requests and approved fifty-two. A request was not the same as an individual applicant, because some students submitted a new request after a previous loan ended.

Students appreciated having equipment available, but sixteen requests were not approved within the original period. Staff did not know whether those students later borrowed a different device or completed the project without one. They also had not measured whether the service improved grades. A representative argued that buying another twenty devices would solve the problem, but the librarian said that scheduling, charging and maintenance could affect access as much as the number of laptops.

Before making a permanent decision, the school planned to record waiting times, distinguish repeat applications from unique applicants and survey students whose requests were delayed. The writer concluded that the service was worth continuing while its fairness and educational effect were evaluated with better evidence.

How will the museum measure whether visitors understand the exhibits better?

They may be related, but visitors’ preferences and comprehension should be measured separately.

本文根拠:comprehension had not been measured。

本文根拠:recommend continuing and claims supported by observations。

The museum offered multilingual labels with clearer design, and thirty-five of fifty survey respondents preferred them. However, the trial did not show better comprehension because understanding was not measured and several features changed together.

Preference among respondents does not establish improved comprehension among all visitors.

問10|意見英文モデル(68語):I support improving museum labels because visitors should be able to explore scientific information in a format they can understand. In the fictional trial, thirty-five of fifty survey respondents preferred the revised labels. However, that result did not prove that comprehension improved, and several design features changed at once. The museum should compare different designs and test what visitors actually understand before deciding which format to use permanently.

How many different students actually attended workshops before and after the change?

More options might fit different interests, but they could also make decisions harder.

本文根拠:six and sixteen options。

本文根拠:some students applied for more than one。

本文根拠:forms not confirmed attendance / groups and instructors differed。

本文根拠:unique enrolments, attendance and access。

The school expanded its after-school workshops from six to sixteen, and application forms increased from ninety to one hundred and twenty. Because students could submit multiple forms and other conditions changed, these figures did not prove increased participation.

The increase in application forms cannot be treated as an increase in individual participants.

問20|意見英文モデル(65語):Offering more workshops could help students find activities that match their interests, so I would not return immediately to the smaller list. However, the fictional school’s records counted application forms rather than individual students, and the groups differed between terms. I would ask students which choices were accessible, count actual attendance and compare similar periods before deciding whether the expanded programme offers a meaningful improvement.

Could the same animal appear in more than one photograph?

The club should use comparable observation periods and camera settings.

本文根拠:eighty-two photographs vs sixty-three。

本文根拠:visibility and zoom settings。

本文根拠:same crab several photographs / hidden from view。

The club recorded eighty-two photographs of possible crabs at one site and sixty-three at another. Because the same animals might appear repeatedly and observation conditions differed, the photographs did not establish a difference in crab populations.

Photograph counts do not identify individual crabs or prove a population difference.

問30|意見英文モデル(67語):I support continuing the coastal observation project because it gives students experience in collecting and questioning evidence. The fictional club found more photographs of possible crabs at site A, but different camera settings and visibility made the results difficult to compare. The next study should use similar conditions and ask a specialist to review identification methods. Students should report photograph counts without claiming to know exact populations.

How long do different students wait before receiving a laptop?

A clearer booking schedule might help students share the existing laptops.

本文根拠:submitted a new request after previous loan。

本文根拠:staff did not know whether …。

本文根拠:scheduling, charging and maintenance。

The school received sixty-eight laptop-loan requests and approved fifty-two in three weeks. However, the figures did not identify individual applicants or prove better learning outcomes. The school planned to measure waiting times and delayed requests before deciding how to expand.

Loan requests do not prove how many different students received fair access or improved their grades.

問40|意見英文モデル(64語):I support keeping the laptop-lending service because students should have access to tools needed for school projects. In the fictional trial, fifty-two of sixty-eight requests were approved, but some students applied more than once. Buying more laptops might help, yet scheduling and maintenance also matter. I would check waiting times and ask students whose requests were delayed before choosing whether additional devices are necessary.
