Selective quotation

Original fictional passage: In a fictional school newsletter, the library supervisor described a one-day observation: ‘At 4 p.m. on Tuesday, 20 of our 24 study-room seats were occupied.’ She added, ‘That is a high occupancy level for this particular observation, but we do not yet know the average demand on other days.’ The supervisor suggested checking seat use at several times before deciding whether to extend opening hours. She did not claim that every student needed the room or that the room was completely full. A student editor proposed the headline ‘Supervisor says study room is full every day’ and quoted only the sentence about twenty occupied seats. The editor’s wording changed both the number of occupied seats and the period of the observation.
問1:Who made the original observation?
問2:Identify the exact time and day of the recorded count.
問3:How many seats were occupied out of how many?
問4:Calculate the observed occupancy percentage to one decimal place.
問5:What limitation followed the quotation?
問6:Why is ‘full every day’ misleading?
問7:Write a faithful, brief attribution of the original words.
問8:May the editor omit ‘on Tuesday’ if the result is then described as a daily average?
問9:Write a corrected headline.
問10:Produce a balanced summary with responsible quotation.
Original fictional passage: In an original fictional student report, two weeks of building electricity records were compared. The report stated, ‘The recorded electricity use declined from 800 to 740 kilowatt-hours.’ Immediately afterward it explained: ‘However, outdoor temperatures and classroom use also changed, so these figures alone do not establish which factor caused the difference.’ The team had proposed switching off unnecessary lights, but no controlled trial of that reminder had been completed. A poster summary quoted only the first statement and declared, ‘Our reminder system saved 60 kilowatt-hours.’ This was not a faithful account of the report: the recorded decline was real in the example, but the cause had not been isolated.
問11:State the two recorded electricity quantities and unit.
問12:Calculate the numerical decline.
問13:Calculate the percentage decline relative to the first week.
問14:What warning immediately followed the selected quote?
問15:Was a controlled reminder-system trial completed?
問16:Why is ‘the reminder saved 60 kilowatt-hours’ not justified?
問17:Write a faithful one-sentence paraphrase.
問18:Can an ellipsis remove the ‘however’ sentence if the summary still claims causation?
問19:Write a corrected poster headline.
問20:Write an accurate context-aware summary.
Original fictional passage: At a fictional school, a volunteer named Yui discussed a QR-code map during a classroom interview. She said, ‘The map was convenient when my phone connected quickly, but I could not open it during the first attempt.’ She later added that a printed map had helped her find the room while the connection failed. The interviewer recorded this as one person’s experience, not the result of a representative survey. An online student newspaper used only the four words ‘The map was convenient’ and introduced them with the sentence, ‘Students have confirmed that the QR map works for everyone.’ The selective quotation ignored both the condition and the failed first attempt, while changing one speaker’s experience into a claim about all students.
問21:Who was interviewed?
問22:Under what condition did she find the map convenient?
問23:What went wrong during the first attempt?
問24:What alternative helped her while the connection failed?
問25:How many different participants were represented by this interview?
問26:Why did the shortened quotation distort her position?
問27:Can the interview prove QR maps work for everyone?
問28:Write an accurate quotation with enough context.
問29:Write a balanced headline for the student newspaper.
問30:Write a faithful short explanation of both sides.
Original fictional passage: A fictional student council discussed extending the library’s opening time by one hour. The meeting record stated, ‘The committee agreed to prepare a plan for a Friday trial.’ In the next sentence, it added, ‘The trial itself has not been approved; staffing and safety must be reviewed by the principal.’ A separate student notice copied only the first sentence and announced that the library would definitely remain open one hour later every Friday. At the time of the notice, no timetable change had been authorised. The quotation contains words that appeared in the record, but its use suggests a decision that the record explicitly denied.
問31:What was the committee’s actual decision?
問32:Was the longer schedule already authorised?
問33:What still required review?
問34:What part of the record was selectively quoted?
問35:Why is ‘the library will definitely open later’ inaccurate?
問36:Give the appropriate tense for reporting the committee’s decision.
問37:Which readers could be misled by the incorrect student notice?
問38:Can an accurate quotation still mislead when its context is omitted?
問39:Write a corrected notice.
問40:Write a balanced paragraph restoring the missing context.

1:The library supervisor reported the observation.
2:It was Tuesday at 4 p.m.
3:Twenty of twenty-four seats were occupied.
4:The occupancy was approximately 83.3 percent at that time.
5:Demand on other days had not been measured.
6:The room was not completely full in the observation, and only one time was reported.
7:The supervisor reported that twenty of twenty-four seats were occupied on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
8:No. That omission would change a one-time observation into an unsupported generalisation.
9:Twenty of Twenty-Four Study-Room Seats Occupied in One Tuesday Check
10:The library supervisor reported that twenty of twenty-four seats were occupied at 4 p.m. on one Tuesday. She described this as a high occupancy level for that particular observation but noted that demand on other days was not known. The evidence therefore supports a statement about one busy moment, not a headline claiming the room was full every day. The supervisor proposed additional observations before any decision on opening hours. An accurate summary should preserve the date, denominator and limitation rather than selecting one striking number and changing its meaning.
11:The figures were 800 and 740 kilowatt-hours.
12:The recorded quantity declined by 60 kilowatt-hours.
13:The decline was 7.5 percent of the original value.
14:Weather and classroom use also changed, so the cause was not established.
15:No. No controlled trial of the reminder had been completed.
16:The report observed a difference but did not isolate the reminder’s effect.
17:Electricity use was 60 kilowatt-hours lower in the second week, but the reason for the change remained uncertain.
18:No. Removing a qualification to imply a proven cause would distort the original meaning.
19:Electricity Records Show a 60-kWh Decline; Cause Not Yet Established
20:A fictional school report recorded an electricity-use decline from 800 to 740 kilowatt-hours across two weeks, a reduction of 60 kilowatt-hours or 7.5 percent. The report also explained that outdoor temperatures and classroom use had changed, preventing an isolated explanation of the difference. Although students had proposed reminders to switch off unnecessary lights, a controlled trial of that proposal had not been completed. Selecting the numerical sentence alone to claim that reminders saved 60 kilowatt-hours changes the report’s meaning. A responsible summary states the decline and the uncertainty about its cause together.
21:One fictional volunteer named Yui was interviewed.
22:She found it convenient when her phone connected quickly.
23:She could not open the QR-code map on the first attempt.
24:A printed map helped her find the room.
25:The account represents one volunteer’s experience.
26:It removed the connection condition and the failed attempt.
27:No. A single mixed experience cannot establish universal usability.
28:Yui said the map was convenient when her phone connected quickly, but she could not open it at first.
29:Student Reports QR-Map Convenience and Connection Difficulty
30:In a fictional classroom interview, Yui described both an advantage and a limitation of a QR-code map. She found it convenient when her phone connected quickly, but she could not open the link on her first attempt. During the connection problem, a printed map helped her reach the room. The student’s experience therefore does not support the claim that a digital map always works for every visitor. By quoting only her positive phrase, the newspaper omitted the condition and the negative experience. An accurate account should retain both and describe the statement as one person’s experience, not a school-wide finding.
31:The committee agreed only to prepare a proposal for a Friday trial.
32:No. No schedule change had been approved.
33:The principal still needed to review staffing and safety.
34:Only the sentence about preparing a plan for a trial.
35:Preparing a proposal is not the same as approving or implementing new hours.
36:The committee agreed to prepare a proposal, but no trial had been approved.
37:Students planning to use the library on Fridays could be misled.
38:Yes. True words can create a false impression when important conditions are removed.
39:The council will prepare a proposal for longer Friday library hours. The trial is not yet approved.
40:A fictional student council agreed to prepare a proposal for a one-hour extension of Friday library opening times. The meeting record then made clear that the proposed trial had not been approved and that staffing and safety required the principal’s review. A student notice that quoted only the preparation decision incorrectly presented the new timetable as certain. The copied words were genuine within the fictional record, but the missing next sentence changed their practical meaning. An accurate notice should state that the council is preparing a plan and that current opening hours remain unchanged until any necessary approval is given.
- one dayをevery day、some studentsをall studentsへ変更する。
