Original Reading: A high school considered sending optional email updates about its annual science festival. The student council wanted to understand whether the design of a sign-up form might influence students’ choices. It prepared two fictional forms for a small classroom exercise. Form A had an empty box beside the statement ‘I would like to receive festival updates.’ Form B displayed the same option selected by default, but clearly told students that they could remove the selection. Both forms stated that the updates were optional and that a choice could be changed later. Thirty volunteers completed Form A, and twelve chose to receive updates. Another thirty volunteers completed Form B, and twenty-one kept the default selection. The observed selection rates were forty percent and seventy percent, a difference of thirty percentage points. One student announced that the default setting had definitely caused the difference. The teacher pointed out that the two groups had not been randomly assigned and might have differed in their interest in the festival. The results were consistent with a possible default effect but did not prove its size or cause. The club also discussed why an optional communication preference should be explained clearly and should remain easy to change. Its revised report listed the group sizes, the choices made, and the limits of the comparison. It recommended a better-designed study before changing the school’s actual communication policy.
