NEW TREASURE(ニュートレジャー)Stage5のFurther Readingや初見長文で、単語を直訳しても意味が取れない場合は、metaphor(隠喩)・simile(直喩)・personification(擬人化)・irony(皮肉)・rhetorical question(反語的な問い)を確認しましょう。

1|The Clock Swallowed Our Morning(皮肉と隠喩)
Original fiction: The students had planned to begin their science presentation at nine. At nine twenty, the projector was still dark. A long cable lay across the floor like a sleeping snake, and three students were searching for an adapter. When the projector finally lit up, Ken looked at the clock and said, ‘Perfect timing.’ Nobody thought he meant that the delay was perfect. His tired smile and the twenty minutes they had lost made the opposite meaning clear. Their teacher asked what had happened, not who should be blamed. ‘The clock swallowed our morning,’ Ken replied. The clock, of course, had eaten nothing; the phrase described how the delay seemed to consume their limited time. The teacher gave them a shorter time slot and asked them to focus on their main evidence. Ken nodded. The presentation could still be useful, although it would no longer include every slide. Later he wrote a reminder to test the equipment before the next meeting.
問1:What time had the presentation been scheduled to begin?
問2:What problem was still present at nine twenty?
問3:Identify the simile in the first part of the story.
問4:Did Ken literally praise the timing when he said ‘Perfect timing’?
問5:Which two clues establish the ironic meaning?
問6:What does ‘The clock swallowed our morning’ mean?
問7:Is the clock literally shown to be able to eat?
問8:What did the teacher do after learning about the delay?
問9:Does the story establish that the presentation failed?
問10:Summarise the irony and metaphor in two sentences.
2|The Bridge in the Notebook(直喩・隠喩・擬人化)
Original fiction: Mina and Oliver had different opinions about the school’s new library map. Mina wanted a printed copy at the entrance, while Oliver preferred a QR-code version. At first, they spoke as if each suggestion were a wall. ‘The other plan won’t work,’ Mina said, although she had never tested it. The silence sat between them for a full minute. Then Oliver drew two columns in his notebook: ‘What we know’ and ‘What we still need to ask’. He wrote down the different needs of visitors, including people without smartphones. Mina added a question about the cost of printing. Their questions became bridges between the two plans. Like ropes across a narrow stream, the questions allowed them to move from fixed positions toward a shared problem. By the end, they had not decided which map was best. Instead, they agreed to test both formats with visitors. Oliver closed the notebook and said, ‘Perhaps the bridge wasn’t a third map. It was our willingness to ask.’
問11:What two map formats were initially preferred?
問12:Had Mina tested the QR-code plan before judging it?
問13:What is personified in ‘The silence sat between them’?
問14:What two notebook columns did Oliver create?
問15:Identify the metaphor ‘Their questions became bridges’.
問16:Identify the simile used to describe the questions.
問17:Did the students build a physical bridge?
問18:What important practical concern did Mina add?
問19:Did the group select a final map format?
問20:Explain what the last sentence suggests about communication.
3|Who Can Learn Without Questions?(反語と実際の質問)
Original fiction: In an English class, some students were afraid of asking for explanations. They thought questions would prove that they had not studied enough. On the board, their teacher wrote, ‘Who can learn if nobody ever asks?’ She did not wait for the name of a student who could learn that way. The question was meant to challenge the belief that silence was always better than asking. She then asked a different question: ‘Which word in the paragraph is unclear?’ This time, she waited for an actual answer. A student raised his hand and said, ‘The word nevertheless.’ The teacher explained that it introduced a contrast with what had just been said. She then called the lesson a journey through unfamiliar ideas. The journey had no physical road; it meant a process of learning. After class, the students agreed that not every question needed a perfect answer. Sometimes a question simply opened the next page.
問21:Why were students hesitant to ask questions?
問22:Quote the rhetorical question on the board.
問23:Did the teacher expect a student’s name in response to that question?
問24:What belief did the rhetorical question challenge?
問25:Which question required a literal response?
問26:Which word did the student identify?
問27:What function did the teacher attribute to that word?
問28:Is the ‘journey through unfamiliar ideas’ a literal trip?
問29:What does ‘a question simply opened the next page’ suggest?
問30:Explain the difference between the two questions in the passage.
4|The Suggestion Box That Heard Nothing(状況の皮肉と象徴)
Original fiction: The student committee wanted a new way to listen to suggestions about the school festival. At its opening ceremony, the chair proudly announced, ‘This box will welcome every voice.’ A shining wooden box stood outside the office, with the words WE ARE LISTENING painted in gold. During the first week, not a single note appeared inside. The chair was disappointed and blamed the students for being uninterested. Then a younger student pointed at the narrow slot: it had been sealed with glue during construction. Nobody could put a note through it. ‘What a wonderfully open system,’ the younger student said, looking at the blocked slot. Her words were not sincere praise. The committee removed the glue and placed clear instructions beside the box. Within two days, several suggestions arrived. The box was no longer simply a symbol of listening; it was a working way for people to be heard. The chair admitted that good intentions had not been enough.
問31:What was the committee’s stated purpose?
問32:What message was written on the box?
問33:What unexpected problem stopped suggestions during the first week?
問34:What wrong explanation did the chair initially assume?
問35:Why is the blocked box situationally ironic?
問36:What did the younger student’s ‘wonderfully open system’ mean?
問37:What did the committee change?
問38:How quickly did suggestions arrive after the change?
問39:What could the box symbolise beyond its literal function?
問40:What lesson does the ending support?

4|The Suggestion Box That Heard Nothing(状況の皮肉と象徴):全解答
