Original Reading: A high school student council studied whether classroom cleaning routines were being followed. In the week before a scheduled observation, the average number of completed end-of-day cleaning checks was twelve. During the following week, students knew that council members would observe the process. The recorded average rose to eighteen completed checks. One member argued that simply watching students had increased their effort. A teacher explained that this was a possible observation-related effect, sometimes discussed under the term Hawthorne effect, but it was not a proven explanation for these records. The class had also received a new reminder poster, and teachers had discussed cleaning duties at the beginning of the week. The council had not compared the results with another class that experienced similar reminders without observers. The teacher therefore asked the researchers to separate the observed six-check increase from the possible reasons behind it. Students calculated that the difference was fifty percent relative to the initial average of twelve. They also noted that the study counted checks, not the actual amount of time students spent cleaning or the quality of the cleaning. In the next project, the council planned to use a clearer definition of a completed check and to compare several weeks under similar conditions. The final report described the evidence and did not claim that observation alone had caused the improvement.
