On the first day of term, an empty chair stood beside the classroom window. It belonged to nobody, but the students kept their bags on it because the room was crowded. Nao, who had recently joined the class, sat alone near the door. She wanted to ask whether she could move closer to the window but decided against interrupting the others. During the following weeks, the class began a research project. Nao discovered that the group needed someone to organize its notes, and she offered to help. At first, a classmate named Ren gave her small tasks. Later, he asked her to lead the discussion about the final report. Nao found one incorrect date in the draft, checked the source, and explained the correction. The team thanked her and changed the caption. On the last day of term, the same chair stood beside the window. This time no bag covered it. Ren pointed to it and said, ‘We kept a place for you.’ Nao sat down and opened her notebook. The room had not changed much, but her relationship with the class had. The repeated chair connects the opening and ending, while its use changes from an empty place for bags to an invitation to belong. The story does not say that every student in the school became her friend.

Not yet
At the beginning of the science club’s project, Mika stared at a blank chart and wrote ‘Not yet’ beside the question ‘Do we know the amount of water saved?’ Her team had built a small rainwater collector, but it had no measurements. Some students wanted to claim that it was already successful. Mika refused because an unmeasured result could not be presented as fact. Over the next month the group recorded daily amounts, checked the container for leaks, and compared the results with a reference bucket. A storm interrupted one week of data collection, so they marked those days as missing. By the final meeting, the team could report the volume collected during valid observation days, but it still could not say how much water an entire neighborhood would save. The teacher asked Mika to update the poster’s conclusion. Mika wrote, ‘We know what our trial measured. Do we know the neighborhood effect? Not yet.’ The words ‘Not yet’ appear at both the opening and closing of the story. At first they stand beside an empty chart; at the end they follow a measured result and a clearly limited question. The phrase stays the same while its context changes from having no evidence to knowing the evidence’s boundaries. The story does not claim that the project failed.

In the opening scene, Taro stood outside the school newspaper room and watched the editor unlock the door. Only the editor had a key, and Taro had to wait whenever he arrived early. He was not angry, but he thought the system wasted time. During the term, the club lost an opportunity to check a historical photograph because no key holder was available. Taro suggested that authorized members should be able to borrow a shared key from the school office. The teacher agreed to review the idea, but it took several meetings to establish a safe procedure. The new rules required members to sign a borrowing register and return the key before leaving. The school approved the system. In the final scene, Taro stood outside the same door at the same early hour. This time he held the shared key after signing the office register. He opened the door, turned on the light, and left the key in the approved storage place inside the room. Another student arrived and asked whether the records could now be used by anyone. ‘Only by authorized members,’ Taro replied. The story begins and ends at the same door, but the power to open it and the responsibilities around the key have changed. The repeated scene does not imply that every school record became public.

On Monday, the school science club met beside a river and asked, ‘Is the water clean?’ The members looked at the surface. It was clear enough to see stones beneath it. One student said that this proved the river was safe. Their teacher asked them to define what they meant by clean. The class collected a small sample and planned to measure several indicators. Over the next two weeks, the students recorded temperature and visible litter, but the school laboratory could not complete every chemical test. Some values were missing, and the teacher warned them not to invent results. On the last day of the project, the club returned to the same place and asked again, ‘Is the water clean?’ The surface still looked clear. This time nobody immediately answered yes. A student said, ‘We can describe the measurements we have, but we cannot make a complete safety judgment without the missing tests.’ The teacher nodded. The question and setting repeat at the beginning and end, but the students’ response changes. The story’s circular structure highlights a shift from relying on appearance to recognizing what evidence is needed. It does not conclude that the river was polluted or safe.

The story begins and ends with an empty chair by the classroom window. At first, the chair is used for bags, while Nao sits alone near the door. By the final scene, Ren has kept the chair free for her. The repeated setting highlights a change in Nao’s relationship with the class rather than a change in the room itself. The ending does not claim that every student has become her friend.
