Further Reading
- 1. Story fact:
- 3. Response:I was surprised … / I liked … because … / I disagreed …
- 4. Reflection:Why?
学校の「Summarize the story」なら原則として感想を足さず、「Write your response」「What did you think?」
独自短編A|The Seedling Sign(問1〜10)
The pots outside our classroom had been moved under the roof during the rain. When I came to water the seedlings on Monday, I found a small card attached to one pot: ‘PLEASE DO NOT WATER.’ The soil looked dry. I thought that my classmate Ryo, who had written the card, had forgotten how much the plants needed us. I nearly removed it, but I noticed a second line in much smaller letters: ‘Trial 2: check the weight first.’
Ryo arrived carrying a notebook. He explained that our science group was comparing two watering schedules. The teacher had asked us to weigh the pots before adding water, but the first trial had been interrupted by the storm. Ryo was not trying to keep water away from every plant; he wanted this one measured before anyone changed it. I helped him weigh the pot, and we watered it afterward according to the plan.
I kept the card in my notebook. I still thought the first line sounded too severe, so I suggested making the explanation larger next time. Ryo agreed. The card had stopped me from acting too quickly, but its unclear wording had almost made me misunderstand the experiment.

B|The Thread Across the Stage(問11〜20)
During a rehearsal for the school play, a narrow strip of the curtain tore near the bottom. The actors wanted to begin again, but the costume manager, Emi, asked them to wait. She had a needle and a spool of red thread. ‘It will only take a moment,’ she said. I thought the repair would look strange against the dark blue curtain, but I stood beside her and held the fabric steady.
Emi made a careful line of stitches. When she finished, the red thread was clearly visible from close up. I suggested that we cover it with blue tape. She shook her head and asked me to sit at the back of the hall. From there, I could barely see the repair. When the actors started their scene, the curtain moved freely, and the small red line disappeared among the shadows.
After rehearsal, Emi explained that she had chosen the strongest thread available. She did not say that its colour was ideal. I had assumed that a visible repair must spoil the performance. Instead, I realised that the effect depended on where the audience sat and whether the curtain still worked. I asked Emi to show me how to sew a stitch that would hold.

C|The Picture That Stayed Offline(問21〜30)
Our town’s student exhibition was almost ready. I had taken photographs of volunteers preparing the garden, and I wanted to put every picture on the website. My friend Aya stopped at one image showing three people beside a fence. ‘Have they agreed to be online?’ she asked. I replied that they had smiled for the camera. I thought a smile was enough.
Aya showed me the exhibition form. It permitted the pictures to be displayed inside the community hall, but it said nothing about publishing them on a website. I was disappointed because the picture was one of my favourites. We asked the organisers to confirm the permissions rather than guess. Two volunteers agreed to online publication, but the third preferred to appear only in the hall. We decided not to upload that photograph.
At the exhibition, I watched visitors stop in front of the printed picture. It was still part of the story we wanted to tell. Later, I chose a different image for the website, one that showed the empty garden beds before the project began. The online page was less colourful than I had first imagined, but I knew why the difference mattered.
D|The Page with Room to Write(問31〜40)
The library in our fictional neighbourhood kept a notebook beside its small reading table. Visitors could write one sentence recommending a book to the next reader. When I opened it, the first pages were crowded with titles and comments. Near the end, I found one page that contained only three words: ‘Read it slowly.’ The rest of the page was blank.
I assumed someone had forgotten to finish a recommendation. I asked the librarian whether we should remove the page so that nobody would be confused. She said the notebook belonged to its visitors, not to the library staff alone. She did not know who had written the words or which book they referred to. ‘You can add something if you wish,’ she said, ‘but perhaps another reader will want to use that space.’
I thought about a difficult book that I had nearly given up on. Instead of filling the page with my own title, I wrote one short sentence below the first words: ‘You do not have to understand everything at once.’ I closed the notebook and left enough room for someone else to answer.
独自短編A|The Seedling Sign|全解答
解説・本文根拠:came to water the seedlings。
問2:PLEASE DO NOT WATER.
解説・本文根拠:forgotten how much plants needed usという語り手の考え。
Trial 2: check the weight first。
解説・本文根拠:not trying to keep water away from every plant。
解説・本文根拠:suggested making the explanation larger。
問9:Fact: Ryo wanted to weigh the pot before watering it. Opinion: I think the warning should have explained the reason more clearly.
10:I liked The Seedling Sign because it shows how an instruction can be useful and confusing at the same time. The narrator first assumes that Ryo is neglecting a plant, but the smaller note and Ryo’s explanation reveal a scientific reason for waiting. The narrator does not simply accept the original sign; instead, the two students agree to make the instructions clearer. I think this ending is convincing because understanding another person’s purpose does not mean every detail of the communication was perfect. The story reminds me to ask questions before making judgments.(93語)
B|The Thread Across the Stage|全解答
解説・本文根拠:a narrow strip … near the bottom。
解説・本文根拠:a spool of red thread。
解説・本文根拠:strange against the dark blue curtain。
解説・本文根拠:sit at the back of the hall。
解説・本文根拠:could barely see the repair。
解説・本文根拠:did not say its colour was ideal。
解説・本文根拠:show me how to sew a stitch that would hold。
問19:Fact: The red stitches were hardly visible from the back of the hall. Opinion: I admire Emi’s practical way of solving the problem.
20:The Thread Across the Stage made me reconsider what counts as a successful repair. The narrator worries that red thread will spoil a dark blue curtain, yet the audience’s view and the curtain’s movement matter more during the play. I appreciated that Emi does not claim her choice was perfect; she simply uses the strongest thread available. The final request to learn a stitch shows that the narrator has moved from criticism to curiosity. In my view, the story suggests that we should test a solution in its real setting before judging it.(93語)
C|The Picture That Stayed Offline|全解答
解説・本文根拠:every picture on the website。
Have they agreed to be online?
I thought a smile was enough。
解説・本文根拠:displayed inside the community hall。
解説・本文根拠:third preferred to appear only in the hall。
解説・本文根拠:decided not to upload that photograph。
解説・本文根拠:empty garden beds before project began。
解説・本文根拠:visitors stop in front of the printed picture。
問29:Fact: The group did not upload the photograph without permission. Opinion: I agree with the group’s decision to respect different preferences.
30:I found The Picture That Stayed Offline meaningful because it separates someone’s willingness to be photographed from permission to publish an image. At first, the narrator assumes that smiling for the camera is enough. Aya’s question and the exhibition form show why that assumption is unsafe. I felt the narrator’s disappointment when a favourite photograph could not go online, but I supported the decision to respect the third volunteer’s preference. The story shows that a project can remain valuable even when we choose a less convenient way to share it.(90語)
D|The Page with Room to Write|全解答
解説・本文根拠:write one sentence recommending a book。
問32:Read it slowly.
解説・本文根拠:assumed someone had forgotten to finish。
解説・本文根拠:did not know who … or which book。
解説・本文根拠:another reader will want to use that space。
解説・本文根拠:a difficult book … nearly given up on。
You do not have to understand everything at once。
解説・本文根拠:left enough room for someone else。
問39:Fact: The narrator added one sentence and left space for other readers. Opinion: I find the ending encouraging because it welcomes different reading experiences.
40:I enjoyed The Page with Room to Write because its small action carries a thoughtful message. The narrator initially wants to remove an unfinished-looking page, but the librarian points out that another reader may use the space. The original note, ‘Read it slowly,’ has no confirmed author or book, so we should not invent a hidden story about it. I liked the narrator’s final decision to add a gentle sentence and leave room for others. To me, the ending suggests that reading can be a shared conversation without requiring everyone to understand everything immediately.(94語)
