NEW TREASURE Stage4・5の英作文で「〜するために」と書く場合、for the purpose of・with the aim of・with a view to・in order to・on purposeを正確に区別します。with a view to improving のtoは前置詞なので動名詞、in order to improve は不定詞なので原形です。さらに on purpose は「わざと」であり、単に「〜する目的で」と同じではありません。慶英会独自40問、オリジナル長文2題、全解答・全文和訳で、目的・意図・結果の違いを身につけます。

with a view to doingのtoは前置詞
The school started a pilot with a view to reducing costs. が自然です。with a view to reduce としないようにします。一方 in order to reduce costs は不定詞で原形reduceを使います。意味の似た構文でも語形は異なります。
目的を述べても成果が確認されたとは限らない
学校が費用削減のために試行を始めても、その時点で削減効果が実証されたわけではありません。with the aim of や for the purpose of は意図・目標を示し、succeeded in / achieved / reduced は結果を述べることがあります。目的・実行・成果を別々に読むのが重要です。
on purposeは意図性の副詞句
She changed the number on purpose. は「彼女はその数をわざと変えた」です。教育的な改善を目指して変えたか、悪意があったかは別の事実です。by mistake は「誤って」で、on purposeとは対照的です。
表や比較では推定値と実測値を明示
印刷用紙が試行で100枚、旧手順の推定値が120枚なら、差は20枚です。ただし旧手順が推定にすぎなければ「恒久的な節約20枚が実証された」とは言えません。Stage5のCritical Writingでは目標値・測定値・推定値を区別してください。

英文A｜Course Guide Clarity Survey（慶英会独自の架空資料）
Fictional School Information Survey. A committee distributed forty short questionnaires with the aim of improving the clarity of a course guide. Thirty forms were returned. The organisers calculated a response rate of seventy-five percent and classified the comments by topic. They planned to revise the wording of the guide for the purpose of making the instructions easier to follow. However, the revised guide had not yet been tested with students. The committee therefore described improved clarity as an aim rather than a proven result. It also noted that the ten students who had not replied might have different experiences from those who answered.

Fictional Paper-Saving Pilot. A school club conducted a one-day printing trial with a view to reducing paper use. The trial used one hundred sheets. The previous process had been estimated to use one hundred and twenty sheets for the same activity, but the estimate had not been independently checked. A student said the trial had proved a permanent saving of twenty sheets every day. The teacher replied that a one-day result compared with an estimate did not establish a long-term effect. The trial was conducted for the purpose of testing a possible improvement, not to certify savings before sufficient data were collected.

英文Bの全文和訳
【架空の紙削減の試行】学校のクラブは用紙使用量の削減を目指して1日間の印刷試行を実施した。試行では100枚を使用した。以前の方法では同じ作業に120枚必要と推定されていたが、その見積もりは独立に確認されていなかった。ある生徒は試行によって毎日20枚の恒久的な削減が証明されたと言った。教師は推定値と比較した1日の結果だけでは長期的効果を確定できないと答えた。試行は改善の可能性を検証する目的で実施したのであり、十分なデータが集まる前に節約効果を保証するためではなかった。

よくある質問
Q. with a view toの後ろは動詞原形ですか？
いいえ。toは前置詞なので動名詞を使います。with a view to improvingが基本です。
Q. for the purpose ofとin order toは同じですか？
目的を表す点は近いですが、前者は名詞・動名詞、後者は動詞原形を続けます。
Q. on purposeは『目的で』という意味ですか？
主に「故意に・わざと」という意味です。目標を表すfor the purpose ofとは異なります。
Q. 目的を書いてあれば効果も証明されたのですか？
