prefer doing to doingは、toの後が動名詞
She prefers reading to watching films.のtoは前置詞です。一方、She prefers to read rather than watch films.のtoは不定詞です。prefer reading than watchingと混同しないようにしてください。
would ratherの直後には動詞原形
I’d rather read than watch.が基本で、I’d rather to readとはしません。would rather＋主語＋過去形は別の構文なので、今回は「自分が〜したい」という形を中心に学習します。
好みと行動・実績を混同しない
40人中24人が「紙を好む」と答えたことは、24人が実際に紙で学習したという意味ではありません。preferは選好、chooseは選択、attendは実際の参加など、動詞の示す事実の段階を区別します。

第2部｜独自英文A（問17〜24）
Reading preferences and the school survey（架空の学校資料）
A fictional school surveyed forty students about how they preferred to read English homework. Twenty-four said they preferred printed pages to digital files, while sixteen preferred digital files. The newspaper wrote that sixty per cent of the surveyed group preferred print. A second sentence claimed that sixty per cent of the entire school had adopted paper reading. The teacher asked for a correction because the respondents had volunteered and the survey recorded preferences, not actual reading habits. The school later offered an optional printed booklet for a workshop with thirty seats. Eighteen applicants requested the booklet, but this did not mean that the other twelve preferred digital files. Some had not answered the optional question. The teacher emphasised the difference between a stated preference, a requested resource and confirmed attendance.

A debate club chooses a venue（架空の学校資料）
A fictional school debate club wanted to hold a presentation for twenty-six registered students. The members generally preferred the main hall to a small classroom because it offered more space. The hall held forty people but cost 6,000 yen. The smaller classroom held twenty people and was free. The club had only 4,000 yen available. At its Monday meeting, the chairperson said, ‘For this occasion, I’d prefer to use two free classrooms rather than rent the hall.’ The committee investigated and found two rooms with fifteen seats each. It reserved both rooms on Wednesday and informed all twenty-six registrants. The group did not claim that everyone would attend, nor did it change the event’s planned Friday date. The chairman’s specific preference led to a confirmed reservation, but registration and attendance remained separate.

A preference that changed after the experiment（架空の学校資料）
A fictional science class compared two ways of keeping a record of plant growth. Before the experiment, sixteen of twenty students said they preferred a digital spreadsheet to a paper notebook. The class then used both formats to record measurements for one week. Students found that the spreadsheet was useful for calculating averages, while the paper notebook worked without a charged device. After the trial, twelve students said they would prefer to combine both methods rather than choose just one. The teacher explained that the pre-trial preference and post-trial preference were answers to different questions, and the group should not claim that four students had definitely abandoned digital tools. The class had not measured which method produced fewer recording errors. It planned an accuracy check before recommending a permanent recording system.

An accessible school notice（架空の学校資料）
A fictional high school prepared two versions of a public notice for a cultural exhibition: a detailed printed page and a short mobile-friendly page. A team of ten volunteers generally preferred the printed version for checking complex information. However, for visitors using phones, the organiser said, ‘I would prefer to provide the short page first and link to the complete notice.’ The final website therefore offered both formats, with the short page linking to the official full notice. The date remained Friday and the starting time remained 4 p.m. Five volunteers reviewed the text, and the other five checked the links. The school posted the revised page on Tuesday. No survey of visitors had yet been conducted, so the organisers did not claim that everyone preferred the short format or that every visitor had read the official notice.

英文Aの全文和訳
【架空の読書の好み調査】学校は40人に英語の宿題をどう読みたいか尋ね、24人が印刷資料を、16人がデジタル資料を好んだ。新聞は調査対象の60％が紙を好むと正しく書いたが、全校の60％が実際に紙の学習法を採用したとも書いた。参加者が自発的で、調査は好みだけを尋ねたため教師は訂正を求めた。後に定員30人の講座で紙冊子を任意で提供したところ18人が希望したが、残る12人全員がデジタルを好むとは限らない。任意質問に答えていない者もいた。教師は好み、資料の申請、実際の参加を区別した。
英文Bの全文和訳
【架空の討論会会場】討論部の登録者は26人だった。部員は一般に小教室より大ホールを好んだ。大ホールは定員40人だが使用料6,000円、小教室は20席で無料。予算は4,000円だった。月曜の会議で司会者は「今回はホールを借りるより無料の教室を2室使いたい」と述べた。委員会が15席ずつの2室を見つけ、水曜に両方予約して26人に周知した。全員が実際に参加するとは主張せず、金曜の開催予定日も変えなかった。今回の希望は実際の予約につながったが、登録と出席は別である。
英文Cの全文和訳
【架空の植物記録】実験前には20人中16人が紙のノートよりデジタル表を好んだ。その後1週間、両方式で測定を記録したところ、デジタル表は平均計算に便利で、紙は端末の充電が不要という利点があった。試験後には12人がどちらか一つを選ぶより両方式を組み合わせたいと答えた。教師は実験前の好みと実験後の好みは質問内容が異なるため、4人がデジタルをやめたと断定できないと説明した。記録ミスの少なさも未測定であり、恒久制度を勧める前に精度を確認する予定だった。
英文Dの全文和訳
