Much as・形容詞 as S V・Try as S mightの使い分け
|---|---|---|
| Much as S V | Sがいくら〜でも/高く評価するが | Much as I like the plan, I cannot approve it. |
| 形容詞 as S V | 〜であることは認めるが | Useful as the app is, it cannot replace a teacher. |
| Hard as S V | いくら懸命に〜しても | Hard as they tried, they could not find the file. |
| Try as S might | どれほど試みても | Try as she might, she could not finish. |
| Although S V | 〜ではあるが(通常の接続詞) | Although the room is quiet, it is too small. |
Useful as it isは『有用である事実』を否定しない
Useful as the device is, it cannot prove improved learning. It is not useful.
Much as Iとas much as Iの違い
Much as I like it, I cannot use it. I like it as much as you do.
Try as they mightは試みの強調で成功を保証しない
Try as the team might, the missing records could not be found.

第2部|独自英文A(問17〜24)
Useful as the learning app was(学習用の架空事例)
A fictional high school tested a new English reading app with twenty students over two weeks. The app recorded how long each student spent on the assigned texts. Useful as the app was for monitoring time, it could not show whether comprehension had improved. The average reading time fell from thirty minutes in the first week to twenty-five in the second. A student claimed that the five-minute difference proved the app had increased reading ability. The teacher disagreed because the class had not taken comparable comprehension tests. Much as she appreciated the students’ enthusiasm, she wanted evidence of learning rather than speed alone. The school planned a further trial with the same test before and after using the app. No decision about permanent adoption had yet been made.

Short as the route was(学習用の架空事例)
A fictional school compared two routes for a weekend science visit. Route A was 1.2 kilometres long and had three busy crossings. Route B was 1.5 kilometres long but had no major crossing. Most students expected Route A to be quicker because it was shorter. Short as Route A was, the test group took twenty-two minutes to travel along it, while Route B took nineteen. The teacher explained that distance alone had not determined the time on that particular morning. Hard as the team tried to keep the conditions similar, traffic and waiting times were not fully controlled. The class selected Route B for another trial, not as a permanently proven best route. It also planned to check the route on a rainy day before making a final recommendation to parents.

Much as the organiser wanted to help(学習用の架空事例)
A fictional school library received thirty applications for a writing workshop with only twenty available seats. The librarian wanted to admit everyone but could not exceed the approved capacity. Much as she wanted to help the ten remaining applicants, she had to put them on a waiting list. A student wrote that the librarian did not care about those students because she had not accepted them. The teacher pointed out that the statement ignored the librarian’s expressed intention. The school sent a message explaining the capacity and offered links to free practice materials so that students could study while waiting. By Friday, three accepted applicants had cancelled, and the library offered those places to the first three people on the waiting list. Seven remained there. The workshop was planned for Saturday; attendance had not yet been counted.

第5部|独自英文D(問41〜48)
Try as the editors might(学習用の架空事例)
A fictional student newspaper prepared a report about electricity use. The first chart showed 150 units for one week and 135 for the next. One student incorrectly attached the labels in reverse order. Try as the editors might, they could not find the source of the discrepancy in the displayed chart until they checked the original meter sheet. On Thursday, the team discovered the reversed labels and corrected the report. The two original numbers had been entered correctly; only the labels had been wrong. Important as the corrected chart was, the teacher reminded students that lower use in the second week did not prove that a poster campaign alone caused the change. Room occupancy and temperature had also differed. The newspaper published the corrected chart on Friday and added a note explaining the revision.

=Although the app is useful。
解答2:as 解説:Much as S V=〜を非常に評価するが。
解答4:might 解説:Try as S might=どれほど試みても。
Large as the classroom seems=教室は広く見えるものの。
Reliable as the report seemed=信頼できそうだったが。
解答7:would like 解説:Much as I would like to …=ぜひ〜したいところだが。
Short as the first route was=最初の道は短かったが。
解答9:worked 解説:Hard as S Vで譲歩。
解答12:might 解説:Try as S mightが自然。
解答13:Useful as the tool was, it did not solve every problem.

15:Hard as the team tried, it did not reach the target.
