Likert
- Neutral / Neither:
- Missing / No response:

Source: A fictional school asked twelve volunteers: ‘How satisfied are you with the study room?’ The ordered categories were 1 Very dissatisfied, 2 Dissatisfied, 3 Neither satisfied nor dissatisfied, 4 Satisfied, and 5 Very satisfied. The recorded numbers of responses were 1, 2, 2, 5 and 2 respectively. Everyone who submitted this question selected one category. No school-wide representative sample or improvement in test scores was established.
| Response category | Recorded count |
|---|---|
| 1 Very dissatisfied | 1 |
| 2 Dissatisfied | 2 |
| 3 Neither | 2 |
| 4 Satisfied | 5 |
| 5 Very satisfied | 2 |
問1:How many volunteers answered the satisfaction question?
問2:Which response category was most frequent?

問7:What was the median response category?
問8:Calculate the numerical mean code, with a caution.
問9:Does the survey prove that the room improves English scores?
問10:Write an accurate results paragraph.
Source: Twenty-four fictional students were invited to answer the statement ‘The school notices are easy to understand.’ Twenty returned the question, and four did not answer. The 20 recorded answers used the scale 1 Strongly disagree, 2 Disagree, 3 Neither agree nor disagree, 4 Agree, 5 Strongly agree. Frequencies were 2, 3, 5, 6 and 4. A student choosing 3 supplied a neutral answer; the four nonresponses are separate missing information. The survey did not test comprehension ability.
| Response category | Recorded count |
|---|---|
| 1 Strongly disagree | 2 |
| 2 Disagree | 3 |
| 3 Neither agree nor disagree | 5 |
| 4 Agree | 6 |
| 5 Strongly agree | 4 |
問11:How many students were invited?
問12:How many provided a response?
問13:How many did not respond?
問14:What was the response rate, to one decimal place?
問15:How many chose the middle category?
問16:Is the neutral response a missing value?
問17:How many agreed or strongly agreed?
問18:What share of respondents agreed or strongly agreed?
問19:Does 50 percent agreement establish how all 24 invitees felt?
問20:Write a careful comparison of neutral and missing responses.
Source: Ten fictional visitors answered a five-point satisfaction item with the less usual direction 1 Very satisfied, 2 Satisfied, 3 Neither, 4 Dissatisfied, and 5 Very dissatisfied. The recorded frequencies were 4, 3, 2, 1 and 0. In this particular scale, a lower numerical code represents greater stated satisfaction. Another report might use the opposite direction, so numerical means must not be compared before labels are checked. The final category’s zero means that no respondent chose it; it is not a missing value.
| Response category | Recorded count |
|---|---|
| 1 Very satisfied | 4 |
| 2 Satisfied | 3 |
| 3 Neither | 2 |
| 4 Dissatisfied | 1 |
| 5 Very dissatisfied | 0 |
問21:In this scale, what does the value 1 mean?
問22:What does the value 5 mean?
問23:How many visitors chose one of the two satisfied categories?
問24:Calculate the satisfied share of respondents.
問25:How many respondents selected the neutral category?
問26:How many chose ‘Very dissatisfied’?
問27:Calculate the numerical mean code.
問28:Would a lower mean code indicate greater satisfaction in this scale?
問29:Can its mean of 2.0 be directly compared with a mean from a 1=Very dissatisfied, 5=Very satisfied scale?
問30:Write an accurate scale explanation and limitation.
Source: In a fictional school, fifteen students were invited and ten completed a short questionnaire. All ten answered Item A, ‘I am satisfied with the study room’, using a five-point scale from 1 Strongly disagree to 5 Strongly agree. Its frequencies were 0, 1, 2, 4 and 3. Item B, ‘I feel safe entering the room after lessons’, had only eight answers: 1, 2, 3, 2 and 0; two questionnaire respondents skipped Item B. The five students who did not submit the survey gave neither item response. The two items concern different things: satisfaction and perceived safety. The survey is voluntary and does not measure actual incident rates.
| Response category | Recorded count |
|---|---|
| 1 Strongly disagree | 0 |
| 2 Disagree | 1 |
| 3 Neither | 2 |
| 4 Agree | 4 |
| 5 Strongly agree | 3 |
Additional Item B count order (categories 1 to 5): 1, 2, 3, 2, 0.
問31:How many students were invited?
問32:How many questionnaires were returned?
問33:Calculate the overall survey response rate.
問34:How many answers were recorded for Item A?
問35:How many answers were recorded for Item B?
問36:How many questionnaire respondents skipped Item B?
問37:Calculate agreement with Item A among its respondents.
問38:Calculate agreement with Item B among those who answered it.
問39:Can the results prove that the study room is objectively unsafe?
問40:Write a balanced report with the denominators specified.
1:Twelve volunteers answered it.
2:Category 4, ‘Satisfied’, was the mode, with five responses.
3:Seven respondents chose either ‘Satisfied’ or ‘Very satisfied’.
4:Approximately 58.3 percent selected one of the two satisfied categories.
5:Two respondents selected Category 3.
6:Three of twelve respondents, or 25 percent, selected a dissatisfied category.
7:The median category was 4, ‘Satisfied’.
8:The mean of the codes was about 3.42, but the categories are ordinal and equal distances are not guaranteed.
9:No. It measured satisfaction responses, not learning outcomes.
10:Twelve volunteers answered a five-category satisfaction question about a study room. Seven selected ‘Satisfied’ or ‘Very satisfied’, approximately 58.3 percent of respondents. Two selected the neutral middle category, and three chose a dissatisfied category. The most common response and the median category were both ‘Satisfied’. The numerical mean code was about 3.42, but it should not be treated as an exact interval measure of satisfaction. This small voluntary survey describes the respondents’ opinions and does not establish improved English performance or the views of the entire school.
11:Twenty-four students were invited.
12:Twenty students provided a response.
13:Four students did not respond.
14:The response rate was approximately 83.3 percent.
15:Five chose ‘Neither agree nor disagree’.
16:No. It is a valid recorded category, unlike an unanswered item.
17:Ten respondents chose Category 4 or 5.
18:Half of the twenty respondents, or 50 percent, agreed or strongly agreed.
19:No. Four invitees did not answer.
20:Of twenty-four invited students, twenty answered a five-point question about the clarity of school notices. Ten selected ‘Agree’ or ‘Strongly agree’, while five selected the neutral middle category. Four invitees did not answer at all. A neutral response is recorded evidence of a person’s chosen category; a missing answer provides no stated opinion. The share agreeing among respondents was 50 percent, but the result does not describe the unknown preferences of nonrespondents. It also measures reported perceptions, not actual comprehension of the notices.
21:A value of 1 means ‘Very satisfied’.
22:A value of 5 means ‘Very dissatisfied’.
23:Seven visitors chose Categories 1 or 2.
24:Seventy percent of the ten respondents selected a satisfied category.
25:Two respondents selected Category 3.
26:None did; the recorded count for Category 5 was zero.
27:The numerical mean code was 2.0.
28:Yes, by the direction of the labels in this particular item.
29:No. The numerical directions differ and must be aligned before interpretation.
30:Ten volunteers answered a five-category satisfaction item in which 1 meant ‘Very satisfied’ and 5 meant ‘Very dissatisfied’. Seven selected one of the two satisfied categories, two chose the middle category and one selected ‘Dissatisfied’. Nobody chose the fifth category. The numerical mean code was 2.0, with lower numbers representing greater satisfaction in this scale. Its value should not be compared directly with a questionnaire using the opposite numbering direction. The results describe the ten respondents, not every possible visitor.
31:Fifteen students were invited.
32:Ten questionnaires were returned.
33:The response rate was approximately 66.7 percent.
34:Ten answers were recorded for Item A.
35:Eight answers were recorded for Item B.
36:Two of the ten respondents skipped Item B.
37:Seven of ten, or 70 percent, agreed or strongly agreed with Item A.
38:Two of eight, or 25 percent, agreed or strongly agreed with Item B.
39:No. Item B measured perceived safety, not observed incident rates.
40:Fifteen students were invited to a voluntary school survey, and ten responded, a response rate of about 66.7 percent. All ten answered a satisfaction item, and seven selected ‘Agree’ or ‘Strongly agree’, giving a 70 percent agreement rate among Item A respondents. Eight people answered a separate perceived-safety item, and two agreed, or 25 percent of those who answered it. Two questionnaire respondents skipped the safety item, while five invitees did not respond at all. The questions measured different attitudes, not actual incidents. Their percentages should therefore be interpreted with their own denominators and limitations.
