NEW TREASURE Stage4・5の長文でto the extent that・insofar as・to some extent・to what extent・as far as I knowが出ると、「〜の範囲で」「ある程度」「知る限り」を一律に訳しただけでは主張の強さが分かりません。insofar asは主張が成立する側面・程度を限定する改まった表現、to some extentは部分的な程度、as far as I knowは話者の知識の限界を表します。読解の正誤判定では、この限定を外した選択肢が不正解になることがあります。本記事は慶英会独自32問・長文2題で用法と根拠を確認します。

extentとinsofar asの意味・構文を先に確認

• insofar as：「〜である限りにおいて／〜する程度まで」。主張や評価が成り立つ側面・程度を限定する改まった表現。
• to the extent that：「〜する範囲・程度で」。ある条件・程度に比例して成立することを示す文脈で使われる。
• to some extent：「ある程度」。部分的な肯定であり、完全な肯定ではない。
• to what extent：「どの程度まで」。疑問文・論述課題で、主張の範囲や程度を評価させる。
• as far as I know：「知る限りでは」。数量や地理的距離ではなく、話者の知識が及ぶ範囲に限定する。
• to such an extent that：「〜するほど非常に」。程度が大きく、その結果の節が続く。

辞書での確認：Cambridge Dictionaryはinsofar asを「その程度まで」を表す改まった接続表現として説明しています。またas far as I knowは「全事実を把握していない中で、自分が正しいと思うこと」を述べる語句です。どちらも日本語の「限り」ですが、限定している対象が異なります。

和訳の例：“The conclusion is valid insofar as the measurements are accurate.” →「その測定が正確である限りにおいて、その結論は妥当である」。これは「どんな条件でも妥当」ではありません。“As far as I know, no changes were made.” →「知る限り、変更は行われていない」。全記録を調べた断定とは異なります。

読解A｜オンライン学習支援の範囲：A school introduced an optional online revision program for students preparing for exams. The first report described the program as helpful insofar as students could access the lessons regularly. Some students shared devices with family members, while others had a reliable connection at home. The teachers therefore avoided claiming that the program offered equal benefits to everyone. As far as the teachers knew, most students with regular access completed the weekly tasks, but the school had not yet checked all attendance records. The report concluded that digital practice was promising to some extent and called for additional support for students who faced access problems.

読解B｜地域資料の保存計画：A local museum collected interviews about changes in the town over fifty years. The interviews were valuable insofar as they preserved residents’ memories, but they were not a complete record of events. To the extent that documents were available, researchers compared the interviews with written sources. In some cases the accounts differed, and the researchers left the disagreement visible rather than choosing one story without evidence. As far as the archive staff knew, several old photographs were still missing. The museum decided that the exhibition could explain broad changes to some extent, while clearly identifying areas of uncertainty.

第1部の解答

問1：insofar as。利用できる条件の範囲に効果を限定しています。

問2：to the extent that。証拠が支える範囲に限るという慎重な主張です。

問3：As far as。As far as I knowは「知る限り」＝知識の限界です。

問4：to such an extent that。非常に激しい程度だった結果、道路閉鎖が起きたという構造です。

問5：what。To what extentは「どの程度まで」です。

問6：to some extent。部分的な同意で、全面的な賛成ではありません。

問7：only insofar as。前提が成り立つ範囲に限って適用できる、という意味です。

問8：insofar as。農村部の学校に影響するという観点に議論を限定しています。

問9：確定していません。話者の知る限りの判断であり、全データを確認したとの断言ではありません。

問18：“I agree to some extent.”。to some extentが定型です。

問19：“To what extent is this true?”。程度を問う定型表現は単数です。

問20：誤りではありません。in so far asはinsofar asの表記変種として使われます。

問21：“The program works to the extent that students attend regularly.”。冠詞theが必要です。

問22：“The reaction was strong to such an extent that no one spoke.”。程度の大きさと結果を表します。

問23：“As far as I am aware, no decision has been made.”。知識の限定を表す自然な言い方です。

英作文・要約に使う「範囲を限定する」3文

強すぎる誤答：“The program was equally useful for every student.” 本文には平等な利益を認める根拠がありません。

根拠に沿う修正：“The program was useful insofar as students could access the online lessons regularly.” 定期的なアクセスという条件を保持しています。

知識の限界を示す：“As far as the staff knew, some historical records were missing.” 職員の把握範囲を示し、絶対的に資料が存在しないと断定していません。

程度を示す：“The exhibition could explain the town’s changes to some extent, but important uncertainties remained.” 部分的説明と未確定情報を両立させています。

学校の記述対策では、英文中のonly / some / may / insofar as / as far asに丸を付け、答えでも省略しないこと。翌日、4日後、7日後、14日後に同じ英文を見ずに主張の範囲を復元します。

よくある質問

Q. insofar as と to the extent that は同じですか？

近い意味で使われることがあります。どちらも程度・範囲を限定しますが、自然な語順や文体、文脈での焦点は異なるため、逐語的に機械置換しないでください。

Q. as far as I know は自信がないという意味ですか？

必ずしも自信がないとは限りません。話者が把握している情報の範囲を示し、すべての事実を確認済みだとは主張しない言い方です。

Q. to some extent と to such an extent that はどう違いますか？

前者は「ある程度」という部分的な度合い、後者は「〜するほど」という大きな程度と結果を表す構文です。
