NEW TREASURE(ニュートレジャー)Stage4・5の科学・社会系Readでは、be associated with・be correlated with・be linked to・be attributed to・be caused by・contribute toの違いが、本文の結論を正確に読む鍵になります。
- be associated with A:Aと関連している。
- be correlated with A:Aと相関がある。
- be linked to A:Aと結びついている/関連がある。
- attribute A to B / A is attributed to B:Aの原因をBに帰す。
- be caused by A:Aによって引き起こされるという明確な因果主張。
- contribute to A:Aに寄与する。
- be due to A:Aによる。
語法:associate A with B、correlate A with B、attribute A to B、contribute to A、be due to Aという前置詞の違いをまず固定します。
英文の「Researchers attributed the change to a new rule」は、研究者が原因をそう説明したと述べています。

A survey of 200 students found that those who reported longer sleep tended to have higher reading scores. The researchers said sleep duration was associated with test performance. They did not say that longer sleep had been proven to cause better scores. Some students who slept longer also had more regular study routines, and these routines might affect both sleep and schoolwork. The team planned to collect more information and examine possible alternative explanations. The report recommended caution: students should not treat a statistical association as a guarantee that adding one hour of sleep would raise their scores.
A school replaced old windows to reduce energy loss. Electricity use fell during the next two months, and the facilities team attributed part of the reduction to the new windows. However, the same period was unusually mild, which may also have contributed to lower energy use. The school therefore reported that its improvement was promising but not conclusive. It would compare bills across additional months and adjust for outside temperatures before making a stronger causal claim. The principal emphasized that a practical decision to upgrade the windows was different from scientifically proving exactly how much energy the change saved.
問1:associated with。
2:attributed。attribute A to BはAの原因をBに帰す表現です。
8:attributable。may be attributable toは原因帰属の仮説であり、mayが断定を弱めます。
17:“The report associated poor lighting with lower visibility.”。associate A with Bです。
問18:“Researchers attributed the result to a new method.”。attribute A to Bです。
問19:“The score was correlated with sleep time.”。be correlated withが標準的です。
問20:“The data show an association, but they do not establish that the training caused the change.”。
21:“One factor may have contributed to the increase.”。
22:“Their results are associated with classroom size.”。
23:“The drop may be due to a recording error.”。
24:“The team found a correlation, but further study is needed to assess the program’s effect.”。
誤った飛躍:“Longer sleep caused the higher scores.”
改善例:“Longer sleep was associated with higher reading scores, but the study did not establish causation.”
原因帰属の限定:“The facilities team attributed part of the reduction to new windows, although mild weather may also have contributed.”
- 7日後:長文A・Bを40〜60語で英語要約し、may / part of / according to の限定を落とさない。
Q. correlated withとcaused byは同じですか?
may be attributable toのように仮説として使う場合もあります。
