A higher score is not in itself proof of improvement.

in itself・by itself・on its own・aloneの違い
|---|---|---|
| in itself | それ自体の性質・評価 | The method is useful in itself. |
| by itself | 単独で・自動的に | The door opened by itself. |
| on its own | 外部の助けなしに | The system cannot choose materials on its own. |
| on one’s own | 自力で・一人で | The student completed the essay on her own. |
| alone | それだけで(限定) | The number alone cannot establish a trend. |
| in and of itself | それ自体として(強調) | The result is not conclusive in and of itself. |
in itselfとby itselfは焦点が違う
The plan is not dangerous in itself. The window opened by itself.
on one’s ownと資料の利用は両立する
She wrote the report on her own.
A shorter time alone does not prove better learning.

第2部|独自英文A(問25〜30)
A shorter reading task(架空の学校事例)
In a fictional school, the first reading exercise took students thirty minutes on average. A second exercise took only twenty-four minutes. The teacher welcomed the improvement in speed, but said the shorter time was not in itself evidence that the students understood more. The second text was shorter and used easier vocabulary. One pupil argued that the six-minute difference alone proved the new study method was better. The teacher rejected that conclusion and planned another comparison using texts of similar difficulty. Students had completed the exercises on their own, although the teacher had provided detailed instructions before they began.
第3部|独自英文B(問31〜36)
A classroom screen(架空の学校事例)
A fictional school installed a display that switched itself on at eight each morning. The automatic feature was useful, but the display could not select the correct lesson materials on its own. The teacher had to upload the timetable. On Monday, the screen started as scheduled, yet it displayed an old timetable because the revised file had not been uploaded. The school concluded that automation in itself did not guarantee accurate information. It planned to add a reminder for checking the current files. The display did not need a person to press the power button, but it still depended on people preparing reliable content.

第4部|独自英文C(問37〜42)
Two school gardens(架空の学校事例)
In a fictional science project, plants in Garden A reached an average height of fifteen centimetres, while those in Garden B reached twelve. The three-centimetre difference was recorded correctly. However, the number by itself could not explain the cause because Garden A received more daylight and more water. One student prepared the chart on her own, and another checked it against the measurement sheets. The teacher said that independent work was valuable but did not remove the need to verify the data. The class planned a more controlled experiment before claiming that sunlight alone was responsible for the difference.
第5部|独自英文D(問43〜48)
An independently written proposal(架空の学校事例)
Six students in a fictional school wrote a proposal for a reading event on their own. The teacher did not write the paragraphs for them. However, the students consulted a school safety guide and several public examples. The project budget listed 4,000 yen for materials, but the amount alone did not show whether the event was affordable because room charges had not been calculated. The teacher requested an itemised budget and official room confirmation. The students explained that doing the writing independently did not mean ignoring available information. The proposal had not been approved at the time of the report.
