NEW TREASURE Stage4・5の長文でnot allとnone、not necessarilyとnecessarily、cannot rule outとproveを取り違えると、筆者の主張を正反対に読んでしまいます。Not all students participated. We cannot rule out another explanation.

|---|---|---|
| not all / not every | 全員・全件とは限らない | ゼロだと断定すること |
Not all of the forty students joined the group. None of the forty students joined.
A more expensive pass is not necessarily better.
We cannot rule out the effect of watering.

第2部|独自英文A(問17〜24)
A Library Access Survey(架空の学習用資料)
A fictional secondary school asked forty students whether they had used the online library portal during the previous month. Thirty-one answered yes and nine answered no. The librarian wrote, "Not all students used the portal." This statement was true, but the exact figures gave a clearer picture. It would have been incorrect to write "None of the students used the portal." The survey recorded use, not the number of books students read or their improvement in reading ability. The librarian suggested making the login instructions easier to understand. She did not claim that unclear instructions were the only reason for non-use, and she planned a follow-up survey before deciding on further support.

A Transport Cost Comparison(架空の学習用資料)
A fictional school compared two travel options for students. On Route A, a new pass reduced the price of one journey from 300 yen to 240 yen. On Route B, a different pass increased the cost from 180 yen to 210 yen. The student council concluded, "A new pass is not necessarily cheaper for every route." The statement did not mean that new passes were always more expensive. Instead, the result depended on the route. The council advised students to compare actual prices before buying a pass. It did not have data on how often each student travelled, so it could not calculate total monthly savings for the whole school.

第4部|独自英文C(問33〜40)
A Plant Growth Experiment(架空の学習用資料)
In a fictional classroom experiment, two groups grew seedlings for three weeks. Group One used a bright lamp and received water every morning. Group Two used a dimmer lamp and was watered every other morning. The average final height was 10 centimeters in Group One and 8 centimeters in Group Two. One student said that brighter light must have caused the difference. The teacher replied, "We cannot rule out the effect of watering frequency." Both light and watering schedules differed, so the experiment could not isolate the effect of light alone. The teacher also reminded students that average height did not describe every individual plant. The class planned a second experiment that would keep watering the same for both groups.

A Debate Competition Application(架空の学習用資料)
A fictional school received twelve proposals for a debate competition. Seven proposals passed an initial review, while five needed major revisions. The head teacher wrote, "Not every proposal was accepted at this stage." The teacher did not say that the five proposals would never be accepted. Revised proposals could be submitted again before the deadline. The committee also said, "It is not impossible that some of the five will qualify later." However, no one could guarantee how many would pass. The school wanted applicants to distinguish a remaining possibility from an approved result. The final selection would be announced after the second review, not before it.

Q.not necessarilyとnot alwaysの違いは?
