NEW TREASURE Stage4・5のReadや大学入試の長文では、find oneself doing を「自分自身を見つけて〜する」と逐語訳してはいけません。I found myself reading the passage again. は「気づけばその文章をもう一度読んでいた」。本人が予想していなかった行為・状況に置かれていると気づく表現です。これに対し I found it difficult to read the passage. は「読むのが難しいと感じた」。find oneself doing / find oneself in … / find it＋形容詞＋to do の違いを慶英会独自40問・英文2題・全和訳で学習します。

oneselfの位置が意味を決める
主語Iなら myself、sheなら herself、theyなら themselves です。She found herself reading. では読むのは本人ですが、She found her friend reading. なら読むのは友人です。再帰代名詞を見落とすと登場人物の行動を取り違えます。
find yourselfは自分探しの意味もある
He travelled abroad to find himself. は自分の価値観や生き方を探す表現になることがあります。ただし He found himself working at a library. は「気づけば図書館で働いていた」。同じfind oneselfでも後続の構造と文脈で意味が異なります。
find it difficultを混同しない
I find it difficult to understand this accent. のitは形式目的語であり本人を指す再帰代名詞ではありません。I find difficult to understand… のように必要な目的語itを省くと、学校の標準的な英作文では不自然です。

英文A｜Comparing Translations（架空の場面）
Mina went to the school library to return a book. She noticed two short translations of the same paragraph, one in English and the other in Japanese. Although she had not planned to study translation, she found herself comparing the two versions for several minutes. She realised that one Japanese sentence made the writer’s claim sound stronger than the English original. She took a note and asked her teacher about it the next day.

A fictional research group was planning to write a short summary of a survey. As members read the notes, they found themselves discussing the limitations of the study instead. The group did not discover an error in the figures. However, they found it difficult to explain exactly what the small sample could and could not show. They postponed the final summary to check the wording. The story ends before any revised summary is published.

英文Aの全文和訳
Minaは本を返すために学校図書館へ行った。彼女は同じ段落を英語と日本語で訳した二つの短い翻訳に気づいた。翻訳の勉強をするつもりはなかったのに、気づけば数分間、二つの訳を比べていた。日本語の一文が英語原文より筆者の主張を強くしていることに気づき、メモを取って翌日教師に尋ねた。
英文Bの全文和訳
架空の研究グループは調査の短い要約を書く予定だった。メンバーがメモを読むうち、気づけば研究の限界について話し合っていた。グループは数字の誤りを発見したわけではなかった。しかし、少人数の標本が何を示し、何を示せないかを正確に説明することは難しいと感じていた。彼らは表現を確認するため最終要約の提出を延期した。修正版が公開される前に物語は終わっている。

- 1日目：find oneself doingとfind somebody doingの主体を判断する。
- 2日目：問1〜20を解き、再帰代名詞の一致を検算する。
- 3日目：問21〜30で形式目的語itと再帰代名詞を区別する。
- 4日目：英文AでMinaが当初予定していたことと実際に行っていたことを分ける。

よくある質問
Q. find oneself doingはどう訳すべきですか？
文脈に応じて「気づけば〜している」「思いがけず〜する状況になっている」のように訳します。必ずしも計画的な行為ではありません。
Q. I found myself to read は正しいですか？
この構文で進行中の行為を表すには I found myself reading. と現在分詞を使います。
Q. find myselfとfind myself doingは同じですか？
同じとは限りません。find myselfが自己理解を探す意味になる場合もあります。後続の分詞・場所・状況を見て判断します。
Q. I found it difficult to doは再帰代名詞ですか？
いいえ。itは形式目的語で、難しいと評価する対象は後ろのto不定詞の内容です。
