The denotation of triangle is a three-sided polygon.
connotation語が連想させる評価・感情・観念Cheap may suggest poor quality in some contexts.
literal文字どおり・比喩でない解釈The door is open: the physical door is open.
figurative比喩的・文字どおりではない解釈A mountain of homework means a large amount.
imply表現・情報の発信側が暗に示すThe headline implies a positive result.
infer受け手が根拠を使い推論するThe reader infers concern from repeated warnings.

The writer implies that the new plan is risky.(筆者は危険性を暗に示す)/The reader infers that the writer is concerned.(読者は筆者の懸念を推論する)。ただし推論には原文の根拠が必要です。肯定的な語調や比喩があっても、改善が実測されたとは限りません。

第4部:初見長文2題・12問

以下は慶英会が作成した架空の学校新聞と製品レビューです。比喩表現、測定事実、筆者の評価、読者の推論を区別し、本文から証拠となる英文を探してください。

初見A|『静かな革命』は本当に革命か

A fictional school introduced a new lunchtime reading space. A student newspaper called the change ‘a quiet revolution’. Literally, no revolution had taken place: the school had simply opened one room for reading. The phrase was figurative and carried a positive connotation of an important change. The article reported 80 visits during the first week, but it did not say how many different students came or how much they read. A reader might infer that the writer welcomed the new room, because the article described it warmly. However, the positive tone did not establish that the room had improved reading skills. A teacher suggested comparing reading habits before and after the change.

問37. a quiet revolutionは文字どおりですか。

問38. この表現が持つ含意は何ですか。

問39. 訪問回数は何件でしたか。

問40. 筆者の態度について読者は何を推論できますか。

問41. 読解力向上は証明されましたか。

問42. 教師が提案した次の確認は?

初見B|『軽い』という語は評価を変えるか

A student group tested a fictional digital notebook and wrote two versions of a product description. The first called it ‘a lightweight tool’; the second called it ‘a flimsy device’. Both referred to the same 400-gram object, but the expressions had different connotations. ‘Lightweight’ emphasized portability, while ‘flimsy’ suggested weakness. The students had not tested how strongly the device resisted damage. A reviewer pointed out that a word’s emotional association could influence readers even when the literal measurement was unchanged. The group therefore revised the description to state the weight directly and to separate measured facts from opinions about quality. It also added a note that the test involved just one sample, so general claims about durability were not justified.

No. It is figurative.
根拠:革命は起きていない。

問38 解答:An important and positively viewed change.
根拠:positive connotation。

問39 解答:80 visits.
根拠:80 visitsであり80人とは限らない。

問40 解答:The writer probably welcomed the room.
根拠:warmly described → reader may infer。

問41 解答:No.

問43 解答:400 grams.
根拠:400-gram object。

問44 解答:Portability.
