When Yuna joined a fictional high school’s drama club, she believed that a good actor was someone who could memorise a script quickly and speak without making a mistake. During her first rehearsal, she did exactly that. She remembered every word and delivered each sentence at the same strong volume. Yet the scene felt strangely empty. Her character was supposed to ask a friend for help after losing an important notebook, but Yuna sounded as if she were announcing a competition result. The director did not tell her to become more emotional. Instead, he asked what her character wanted from the friend and what answer she expected. Yuna had not considered those questions because she had been concentrating on remembering words. The director explained that a line of dialogue is an action between people, not just a sequence of sounds. In the next rehearsal, Yuna spoke more quietly and paused after asking for help. She still knew her lines, but she began to listen for a response. The director described this as the beginning of acting, not the completion of it.

At the following meeting, the director wrote one line on the board: “You came back.” He asked four club members to say it in four different situations. In the first, a friend had returned a borrowed book. In the second, someone believed to be lost had appeared safely at home. In the third, a rival who had promised to leave had entered the room again. In the fourth, a student had returned because they had forgotten their umbrella. The words did not change, but the implied meaning did. The first speaker sounded pleased, the second relieved, the third suspicious and the fourth mildly amused. The director warned that these were possible interpretations rather than the only correct emotions. A character might hide relief or pretend to be angry. Yuna realised that intonation and pauses can help express a character’s purpose, but they cannot be chosen well without understanding the situation. She wrote a short note beside each line: Who is speaking? To whom? Why now? What does the speaker want the other person to do next? These questions gave her a practical way to read a script as a human conversation.

The club’s next exercise involved a scene with two actors. One student had to ask for permission to change the date of a meeting. The other had to refuse at first and then explain a possible alternative. Yuna discovered that she often started her next line before her partner had finished speaking. She thought this would make the dialogue move quickly, but it made the refusal sound unimportant. Her partner’s hesitation was supposed to show that the proposed alternative was difficult, and Yuna had not left space for that meaning. During another rehearsal, she listened without planning an immediate response. The silence lasted only a few seconds, yet the scene became clearer. The director emphasised that listening on stage does not mean doing nothing. An actor reacts to new information, and the next line should make sense as a response. Still, a natural pause can be too long for a particular performance. The team had to test its timing with the whole scene rather than decide that all pauses were useful. For Yuna, the lesson was that performance depended partly on cooperation.

For a rehearsal workshop, the director introduced the idea of an objective: something a character wants to achieve during a scene. In a fictional story, a student named Rei wanted a teacher to reopen a closed art room. Rei’s spoken line was polite: “Could we discuss the schedule again?” A first reading made the line sound like an ordinary request for information. However, the actor discovered in the surrounding story that Rei needed a safe place to finish a group project before an approaching deadline. The request therefore mattered to the character in a different way. The director asked the actor to write the objective in simple language: persuade the teacher to consider another arrangement. He also asked for an obstacle: the room was closed for an inspection, and permission had not been granted. The club did not change the official story to make the actor’s objective easy. The obstacle helped create a meaningful exchange. Students learned to distinguish the words on a page from the intention suggested by the wider context, while remaining careful not to invent unsupported details about the character.

The club performed a short scene in a classroom before moving to a school hall. In the classroom, every viewer could see the actors’ faces clearly. In the larger hall, some audience members at the sides could not see a letter that one character was holding. The letter mattered because the story required the audience to understand that it contained a correction to an earlier decision. The director changed the actors’ positions so that the letter was visible without forcing the character to read it unnaturally. He described blocking as the planned movement and positioning of performers on stage. The club also checked that movement did not obstruct an agreed accessible route. One student suggested that good actors should simply move closer to everyone, but that was not always possible or helpful. A gesture that worked for the front row might hide important action from someone elsewhere. The rehearsal used several viewing locations rather than assuming that the director’s seat represented the whole audience. The exercise showed how performance involves both an actor’s choices and the conditions of the space.

To prepare for a school performance, twenty volunteers took part in a fictional rehearsal programme. Each had the opportunity to attend four sessions, although attendance was not compulsory. Twelve attended all four sessions, five attended three and three attended two. The organiser reported a total of sixty-nine attendances across the programme. Some students interpreted this as sixty-nine different actors; that was incorrect because the same volunteers attended several sessions. Another student said that those who attended four times must have improved the most. The club had not tested that claim. Attendance records described participation, not the quality of acting or the reasons anyone came less often. The director proposed using a consistent feedback rubric at the beginning and end of future rehearsals, while acknowledging that such comparisons would still need careful interpretation. He did not want the group to treat a convenient number as proof of artistic progress. The students concluded that records could help planning without becoming a simple ranking of people’s talent.
The club created a feedback rubric for a fictional performance. It assigned thirty points to understanding the character’s objective, twenty-five to listening and responding, twenty-five to clarity of delivery and twenty to cooperation with the scene partner. The total was one hundred points. In one practice, an actor received twenty-four, twenty, twenty-one and eighteen points in those four categories, for a total of eighty-three. The group discussed why the numbers were useful: they pointed to specific areas for discussion rather than the vague comment “good acting.” But the rubric did not eliminate judgment. Two teachers might interpret “listening” differently, and the scores could change if the task or performance context changed. The director proposed discussing examples of strong and weak evidence before using the rubric widely. He also advised students to give feedback in concrete, respectful language. Saying that a person was untalented would not identify a useful next step. Saying that a pause obscured the partner’s response could lead to a specific rehearsal change.

During a later rehearsal, the club tried a short improvisation. The actors received only a situation: two friends needed to decide what to do when a planned train service had been cancelled. They did not receive complete lines to memorise. The students had to listen, clarify the available information and respond to one another. One actor immediately invented a replacement bus that had not been mentioned in the scenario. The director stopped the scene and asked whether that information was available to the characters. It was not. He explained that improvisation should not mean ignoring the established facts of a story. Actors may create responses and choices within a situation while respecting its conditions. The group tried the scene again, this time allowing the characters to ask a station employee for confirmation rather than claiming that a bus definitely existed. The scene became more believable. Yuna noticed that the same habit helped her with written reading comprehension: she could form an interpretation, but she needed to distinguish a possible explanation from something actually stated in the text.

After the school performance, the organisers invited fifty audience members to complete a voluntary feedback form. Thirty-two forms were returned. Twenty participants selected “easy to follow,” eight selected “sometimes unclear” and four selected “difficult to follow.” One student declared that twenty of fifty audience members had understood everything. The director pointed out two problems. The denominator for the reported answers was thirty-two, not fifty, and selecting “easy to follow” did not mean that someone had understood every part. The organisers could say that twenty of the thirty-two respondents found the play easy to follow. They could not claim that this was the view of every audience member. Nor had they independently tested comprehension. Some comments mentioned that the letter in the key scene was difficult to see, although others praised the clear dialogue. These details gave the actors specific information for their next rehearsal. The director preferred a report that acknowledged both praise and problems to one that converted every comment into a general claim of success.

Before the final meeting, Yuna reread the note she had written at her first rehearsal. She had wanted to become a perfect actor by memorising every line. Now she could see why that definition was too narrow. The drama project had required her to consider a character’s objective, listen to partners, adapt movement to the space and accept criticism without treating every comment as a final judgment about her worth. She still practised her lines carefully, because forgetting important words could change a scene. But memorisation had become one part of a larger activity. When the director asked what made a great actor, the group did not agree on a single ranking. Some students valued clear delivery, while others emphasised responsiveness or imagination. The rubric helped them speak precisely, but it did not give a universal formula for art. Their final statement was modest: a convincing performance grows from understanding, cooperation, preparation and the ability to revise choices in response to evidence. Yuna realised that this lesson would also help her when presenting research in English. A good speaker must know both the words and the people listening.

解答1:Quick memorisation and error-free, confident delivery.
2:Attention to what the character wanted and expected from the friend.
3:What the character wanted and what reply she expected.
4:She paused and listened for her scene partner’s response.
全文和訳:次の練習で演出担当はYou came back.
解答5:You came back.
解答6:Relief that someone believed missing returned safely.
7:The words of the line.
8:The emotions were possibilities, not the only correct readings.
9:A request to change a meeting date.
10:Starting her line before her partner finished.
11:It made the difficulty of the alternative clearer.
12:No. Timing must be tested in the complete scene.
全文和訳:演出担当は役のobjective(場面で達成したい目的)を紹介した。 Could we discuss the schedule again?
13:What a character wants to achieve in a scene.
14:Could we discuss the schedule again?
15:Persuading the teacher to consider another arrangement.
16:The room was closed for inspection and permission was pending.
17:Planned movement and positioning on stage.
18:The letter was not visible from some side seats.
19:It contained a correction to an earlier decision.
20:No. The team checked several viewing positions.
24:No. The programme did not measure that.
解答26:Understanding the character’s objective.
解答27:Eighty-three points.
28:No. Teachers may interpret criteria differently.
29:A cancelled train service and two friends deciding what to do.
30:The actors had no complete lines and had to respond in the moment.
31:An actor invented a replacement bus without evidence.
32:The characters asked for confirmation of alternatives.
解答34:Thirty-two.
36:No. It was voluntary feedback, not an independent comprehension test.
37:Defining great acting mainly as memorising every line.
38:Understanding a character’s objective and listening to partners.
39:No. It helps discussion but cannot produce one universal ranking.
40:Convincing acting depends on understanding, cooperation and thoughtful revision, not memorisation alone.
What makes an effective performer?
Memorising a script matters, but it is not sufficient for convincing acting. In the fictional drama club, Yuna delivered every line correctly yet failed to respond naturally to her partner. She improved by considering her character’s objective and the meaning of the other person’s words. The rehearsal also showed that stage movement, accessible viewing and specific feedback affect what an audience understands. Attendance numbers and favourable comments alone cannot prove artistic progress. An effective performer therefore prepares carefully, listens to others and revises choices in response to the needs of the scene.
