A history lesson may introduce a brave person with a single word: hero. That word can express admiration, but it does not explain the work that made rescue possible. Irena Sendler was a Polish social worker who helped Jewish people, including children, during the Holocaust in German-occupied Poland. She did not operate alone. Her story involves families, fellow social workers, underground organisers and people who provided hiding places at enormous personal risk. It also involves records that historians must read carefully. One familiar account associates her work with the rescue of 2,500 children. Yet major Holocaust history institutions state that the exact number saved by Sendler and her partners is unknown. This difference makes the story especially useful for advanced English reading. Students should learn to separate what a source documents, what it estimates and what later retellings emphasise. Understanding these distinctions does not diminish the courage of those who acted. It allows their lives and decisions to be represented with greater accuracy and respect.
Germany invaded Poland in 1939, and Warsaw became part of German-occupied territory during the Second World War. Nazi authorities persecuted Jews, imposed discriminatory restrictions and forced many Warsaw Jews into a segregated area known as the Warsaw ghetto. The ghetto was sealed in 1940. People inside faced severe shortages and dangerous conditions, while Nazi policies escalated into systematic mass murder. The historical setting matters because a choice that sounds simple in an ordinary classroom could have life-threatening consequences under occupation. Delivering food, finding shelter or helping a child escape persecution required secrecy and placed both those seeking help and those offering it at risk. Sendler was already working in social welfare when the war began. Her knowledge of local services and contacts became important resources, but access and relationships alone did not guarantee safety. Many people who needed assistance were never reached, and countless Jewish families were murdered during the Holocaust. A careful historical account must keep the persecution and the victims at the centre rather than turn the story into an uncomplicated adventure.
Sendler had experience in Warsaw’s social welfare services and knew people who could help families in difficult circumstances. During the occupation, she used her work and connections to help bring food, money and other assistance to Jews. Historians describe how access to the Warsaw ghetto and cooperation with colleagues became important parts of her activity. A public position did not make this work safe; the German occupation authorities criminalised many forms of assistance to persecuted Jews. Furthermore, helping someone leave danger was not the same as ensuring a secure future. Children needed places where they could be cared for without immediately being discovered. Adults protecting them also faced serious risks. This makes a useful distinction for reading: a rescuer’s intention, the immediate action and the longer-term outcome are separate matters. The surviving records describe networks and decisions, but they cannot reconstruct every experience of every child. When students write a summary, they should not assume that everyone who received a new identity later reunited with their family. That question requires separate evidence.
4|Żegota
In 1942, a Polish underground council for aid to Jews, known by the code name Żegota, was established. It brought together Polish and Jewish activists who organised different forms of assistance under German occupation. Sendler joined this effort and became involved in its work for children. Members searched for hiding places, arranged material support and relied on contacts who could help people remain alive while avoiding discovery. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum describes Żegota as a clandestine organisation supported by the Polish government-in-exile. Such details matter when a biography mentions leadership. Becoming a leader did not mean acting alone or personally carrying out every rescue. It meant taking responsibility within a larger network. Participants had different roles and faced different kinds of danger. A summary that calls the organisation simply “Sendler’s group” may hide the contribution of the wider Polish-Jewish rescue effort. The evidence therefore supports both the importance of Sendler’s role and the need to recognise colleagues whose names are less familiar to general readers.
The rescuers faced a difficult problem. Children hiding from Nazi persecution often needed replacement identities to reduce the danger of recognition. Yet a change of name could also separate a child from their personal history and surviving relatives. Sendler and her colleagues kept coded records connecting original identities with hiding arrangements. These records were dangerous if they reached the hands of the persecuting authorities, but they could also help identify children and seek family connections after the war. The purpose of a record was therefore not simply to collect information. It was to protect both immediate safety and the possibility of future recognition. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum describes the careful recording of original names and locations, but students should not invent dramatic details about how every note was stored. A historical account needs to distinguish what the sources actually document from later popular retellings. The children were people with names and families, not merely figures in a table. That human fact is essential when reading about coded lists and changes of identity.

Numbers are important in history, but they can also be misunderstood. Stories about Irena Sendler sometimes say that she saved 2,500 children. In an oral-history interview preserved by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Sendler referred to coded records associated with 2,500 children. Other museum materials describe her role in helping several hundred Jewish children escape the Warsaw ghetto. Yad Vashem explains that the exact number saved by Sendler and her partners is unknown. These statements do not all describe exactly the same measure. One may refer to a larger network’s records or aid, another to children helped by Sendler in a particular setting, and another to the limits of what historians can establish. It would be incorrect to take every number as a fully verified count of children she personally carried to safety. Students should write with care: she played a major role in rescuing and assisting Jewish children, working with others, while the exact total is uncertain. Precision about evidence strengthens rather than weakens an account of courage.
By 1943, Sendler had taken a leading role in Żegota’s work for children. In the autumn of that year, the German secret state police, the Gestapo, arrested her. Historical sources describe her imprisonment, severe mistreatment and a sentence of death. Members of the underground rescue network arranged her release by bribing officials. She then continued helping Jews under another identity, despite the danger. These events demonstrate the seriousness of the risks involved, but a responsible educational text does not need graphic detail to make that clear. The dates in historical accounts of the arrest and release are sometimes presented with different levels of precision. For a short reading exercise, it is safer to use the well-supported sequence—leadership, arrest in autumn 1943, release through help from colleagues and continued underground activity—than to choose an exact day without checking the source and context. Students can learn a further lesson from this sequence. Survival and continued work depended not only on an individual’s determination but also on people capable of organising assistance at a critical moment.
After the war, the lives of survivors and rescuers continued in a changed society. In 1965, Yad Vashem recognised Irena Sendler as Righteous Among the Nations, a title honouring non-Jews who risked themselves to rescue Jews during the Holocaust. This recognition is an important documented fact, but it should not become a substitute for explaining the work or the people who were helped. Sendler died in Warsaw in 2008. Her story has been told in books, exhibitions and educational projects, which have helped new generations learn about the rescue network. Popular retellings sometimes place a single person at the centre because a biography is easier to follow when it has one main character. Historians, however, also examine institutions, testimony and the experiences of those who survived. A good English summary can include both the recognition and the wider rescue effort. It should not invent thoughts or speeches simply because they would make a dramatic ending. Respectful history depends on identifying the source of each factual claim.
Suppose two historical sources use different phrases about the same event. One is a survivor’s recollection recorded many years later; another is a museum’s carefully edited summary based on several records. Neither should automatically be ignored, but they answer different questions. A personal recollection can reveal how someone understood an experience and what they remembered. A scholarly summary can compare dates, documents and other testimony, although it also depends on the available evidence. In Sendler’s case, the number of children associated with a coded list and the number she personally helped may not be identical. A headline that collapses them into one exact total risks changing the claim. The class in this reading exercise therefore creates a source chart with four fields: who made the statement, when it was recorded, what it describes and what remains uncertain. The exercise does not ask students to choose the most inspiring number. It asks them to explain why a responsible reader may preserve uncertainty while still recognising that important rescue work occurred.
At the end of the lesson, students were invited to write a short English paragraph about Sendler and the people who worked with her. The teacher offered two requirements. First, the paragraph must explain the persecution that made rescue necessary. Second, it must distinguish documented facts from uncertain numbers. Some students initially wanted to write that one hero saved exactly 2,500 children without help. After reading the sources, they chose more careful language. They described a social worker who joined a Polish-Jewish rescue network, helped endangered children and continued her work despite arrest and serious danger. They explained that records and later estimates do not establish one precise total of children personally rescued by her. Their conclusion was not less respectful for being more accurate. Rather, it gave credit to the children and families affected by Nazi persecution, to the people who took risks and to the many individuals involved in rescue. For the class, the central lesson was that historical empathy and critical reading can strengthen each other. Accuracy is not the opposite of admiration; it is part of how difficult history should be remembered.
1:She was a social worker who helped Jewish people, including children.
2:No. It depended on a network of helpers.
3:No. The exact number is unknown.
4:It does not explain the evidence, cooperation and decisions behind the rescue work.
7:It was carried out under Nazi persecution and occupation.
8:The persecution and the Jewish victims must remain central.
9:Experience and contacts in Warsaw’s social welfare services.
10:No. Children still needed secure places and care.
11:No. They also faced serious risks.
12:No. That outcome requires separate evidence.
4|Żegota
解答14:Polish and Jewish activists.
15:No. It meant responsibility within a wider network.
解答16:The Polish government-in-exile.
17:To reduce the danger of being recognised under persecution.
18:To help identify children and reconnect them with surviving relatives later.
19:Authorities could use it to identify people in hiding.
20:Do not invent details that the sources do not document.
23:No. The exact number is unknown.
24:No. The sources may describe different scopes of assistance.
解答26:The Gestapo.
27:Members of the underground rescue network.
28:She continued underground rescue work under another identity.
解答31:2008, in Warsaw.
32:It can hide the contributions of the wider rescue network.
33:How a person understood and remembered an experience.
解答34:Compare documents, dates and multiple testimonies.
35:It may confuse different measures of rescue or assistance.
36:Who made the statement and what it describes.
37:Explain the persecution and distinguish documented facts from uncertain numbers.
解答38:Claiming one person rescued exactly 2,500 children without help.
39:A social worker working within a Polish-Jewish rescue network.
40:Historical empathy and careful use of evidence should support each other.
Irena Sendler was a Polish social worker who helped Jewish people under German occupation during the Holocaust. She joined a wider rescue network associated with Żegota and worked with others to support children in danger. Coded records of identities were important for both safety and possible family connections after the war. Sendler was arrested in 1943, survived and continued her work. In 1965 she was recognised by Yad Vashem. Although some accounts mention 2,500 children, historical institutions state that the exact number rescued by Sendler and her partners is unknown. Remembering her work responsibly means recognising persecution, cooperation and the limits of surviving evidence.
