NEW TREASURE Stage3で『これまでに変更があった』『会議前に問題が起きていた』と英語で書くとき、There is／There wasだけでは時制を十分に表せません。There has been a change.（変更が一つあった）、There have been several changes.（変更が複数あった）、There had been a problem before the meeting.（会議より前に問題があった）を使い分けます。慶英会では、時制・単複・存在構文とIt isの違いを独自40問・初見Read2題・全解答・和訳で練習できる教材を公開します。

本記事は『NEW TREASURE Third Edition Stage3』を学ぶ中高一貫校の生徒を想定した慶英会の独自補充教材です。Ｚ会公式カタログではStage3 Lesson1に時制・過去完了、Stage8に名詞節などが扱われています。一方、『There has been／There had been』が特定Lessonの新出構文であるとは主張しません。Stage1で学ぶThere is／There areを応用してStage3の時制へつなぐ学習用の演習です。学校の既習範囲を優先し、教科書本文やWorkbookは転載していません。

結論｜『何が存在したか』と『いつまでのことか』を先に決める

最重要ポイント：There has been a problem.は問題が存在・発生したことを伝えます。It has been a difficult week.は状況の評価です。存在構文のthereを、形式主語・指示代名詞itと機械的に交換することはできません。Cambridge Grammarはthere is／areを『存在を初めて導入する』形と説明しています。

単数・複数・不可算を確かめる

会話の非公式な英語ではThere’s two students…のような使用例もありますが、書き言葉・学校テストでは単複を明確にするThere are two studentsが基本です。数が先に分かる名詞句を確認し、形式上のthereを単数と誤解しないでください。

現在完了と過去完了の判断

• since April／so far／today（未完了の日）：現在につながる期間を述べるときはThere has/have beenが自然。
• yesterday／last Friday（終了した時点）：終わった過去の特定日には通常There was/wereを使う。
• before the meeting／by the time the teacher arrived：過去の基準時点より前の出来事を明示する際はThere had beenが有効。
• there had beenの後の名詞が単数でも複数でも、過去完了の助動詞hadは同じ形。

意味に注意：There has been an error.は『誤りが生じた』ということですが、それが現在も修正されていないかどうかは、この一文だけでは決まりません。There was an error, but it has been corrected.なら『誤りがあったが修正済み』です。発生・継続・修正完了を混同しないようにしましょう。

理由：過去の基準時点（teacher arrived yesterday）より前に行われた変更を表すので過去完了there had been。現在完了there has beenは昨日という完了した過去の基準時点には合いません。以前の選択肢there wasも「その時点で変更があった」と述べる自然な場合があるため、誤答扱いを避けて修正しました。
