The science club observed birds in a park on two Saturdays. During the first observation, eight students watched the same path for one hour and recorded twenty-four sightings. On the second Saturday, ten students watched for two hours and recorded forty sightings. One student concluded that the number of birds living in the park had risen from twenty-four to forty. Their teacher pointed out that a sighting was not necessarily a different bird. The same animal might have been seen more than once. The number of observers and the observation time had also changed, so the two results were not directly comparable. The club had not marked individual birds or estimated the population scientifically. It decided to keep the number of observers, the path, and the observation time the same in its next survey. Members would also record weather conditions and bird species. The teacher explained that the original observations remained useful records of what students had seen, but they could not prove how many different birds lived in the whole park. The club wanted its report to distinguish evidence from claims that were still untested.

Students held a fundraising event to buy books for a small community reading room. By Friday morning, they had collected forty-eight thousand yen. Visitors contributed another twelve thousand yen in the afternoon, bringing the total to sixty thousand yen. The class had not spent the money yet. One proposal was to buy twenty books costing two thousand yen each, for a total of forty thousand yen. Another was to buy thirty books costing fifteen hundred yen each, for a total of forty-five thousand yen. A student argued that the second plan was certainly better because it provided more books. A classmate replied that neither price nor quantity showed which titles readers actually needed. The teacher suggested checking the age groups of visitors, books already on the shelves, and space available for new titles. The class decided to delay its order until the reading-room staff replied. If it chose the second plan, fifteen thousand yen would remain. However, it had not yet chosen either option. The class also promised to keep any remaining funds for the reading-room project rather than spend them on unrelated activities.

Hiro was preparing a display about his school’s science room. He found a note dated 1986 saying that a small telescope had arrived at the school. A newspaper printed in 1994 announced the opening of a new observation corner. Hiro initially thought the two sources disagreed about the year when the telescope was introduced. His friend Aya pointed out that the documents described different events. The first recorded the arrival of an instrument, whereas the second described a place where instruments could be used. They could both be accurate even though the dates differed by eight years. Hiro also found a photograph of students looking through a telescope. It had appeared in a school magazine in 1998, but the photograph’s actual date of capture was not written on its back. The students could confidently report the magazine’s publication year, but not the year when the photo was taken. They did not know the photographer’s name either. Rather than invent it, they wrote “photographer unknown.” Their teacher encouraged them to keep verified dates, reasonable explanations, and missing details separate. The completed exhibition invited visitors to share any additional historical records.

Some students want to replace all printed school announcements with smartphone messages. They argue that digital messages can be corrected quickly when times or meeting places change. However, sending an update does not prove that everyone has read it. Some students do not check phones during the school day, and a few families have limited access to digital devices. A printed notice near a classroom can be read without using a personal account. I therefore suggest keeping a small number of printed notices and placing all current information on one official school webpage. Each printed notice should explain where to check for updates. For an important change shortly before an event, teachers should also announce the details directly. The school could test this system for a month, recording how often students visit the wrong room and asking those who missed information why it happened. Still, an improvement after the test would not prove that one particular change alone had caused it; other conditions might also have changed. The best communication system is not necessarily the one with the most messages. Its purpose is to help different students and families understand what they need to do.

Q31. What is one advantage of digital messages?

Q32. Does sending a message prove that everyone reads it?

Q33. Why might digital-only communication be difficult for some families?

Q34. What advantage of printed notices is mentioned?

Q35. What does the writer suggest keeping?

Q36. Where should current information be collected?

Q37. What should teachers do for last-minute important changes?

Q38. How long could the school test the system?

Q39. Would improvement alone prove one change caused it?

Q40. What is the main goal of the communication system?

Q31:They can be corrected quickly.

Q32:No.

Q33:They have limited access to digital devices.

Q34:They can be read without personal accounts.

Q35:A small number of printed notices.

Q36:On one official school webpage.

Q37:Announce the details directly.

Q38:One month.

Q39:No.

Q40:Helping students and families understand what to do.
