Who…?The team leader …
Where…?They met at …
Why…?They did it because …
How often…?They checked it every …
What did … change?They changed …
Could they prove…?No, they could not prove it because …

Passage 1|

Paragraph 1. The students at a small international club were asked to prepare an English notice for their school’s open day. The first draft contained a detailed timetable, but it assumed that every visitor already knew where the gym and music rooms were. When three exchange students read it, they understood the event times but could not find the correct building on the school map.

Paragraph 2. Haruna, who had written the notice, initially wanted to add more English descriptions. Her teammate Leo suggested a different approach. He asked the visitors to point to the entrance they would actually use. Two pointed to the main gate, while one planned to arrive at the side gate near the station. The team discovered that the school used ‘front entrance’ to mean the main gate, although the side gate was closer to the railway station.

Paragraph 3. The revised notice included a simple map with both gates marked, a photograph of each entrance, and a sentence asking visitors to follow signs after arrival. It also explained that some events required advance registration while others did not. The students checked the new version with another group of visitors before publishing it. All four volunteers in this second check found the gym, but the team knew that four people were too few to prove that every future visitor would find it easily.

Paragraph 4. The team kept the notice brief and provided a contact address for questions. Haruna later wrote that clear information was not necessarily longer information. What mattered was identifying the decision visitors needed to make and giving them evidence they could use.

  12. Q12. Summarize the change made by the team in 25–40 English words.

Model answer: The team replaced a long but confusing notice with shorter directions, a map, and entrance photos. Four volunteers could then find the gym, although the team did not claim the notice would help everyone.

Passage 2|

Paragraph 1. A science club wanted to compare how quickly two containers of water warmed in the afternoon sun. The members used containers of the same shape and filled each with the same amount of water. They placed one on a light-colored table and the other on a darker surface. Their prediction was that the water above the darker surface would become warmer, but their teacher reminded them to distinguish a prediction from a measured result.

Paragraph 2. During the first trial, they recorded the temperature every ten minutes for an hour. The second container appeared to warm faster. However, one student noticed that a tree had begun to cast a shadow across the first container halfway through the experiment. The group also discovered that the thermometers had not been checked against each other at the beginning.

Paragraph 3. Rather than announce that dark surfaces always heat water faster, the club decided to repeat the experiment. The members moved both containers to a location where they would receive similar sunlight and compared the thermometers in water at the same temperature. They also decided to repeat the measurements on more than one day. The group recorded the first trial in its notebook, marking the possible influence of shade and instruments instead of deleting inconvenient results.

Paragraph 4. The teacher praised the group not because it had confirmed its prediction, but because it had recognized what its evidence could and could not show. In its final class presentation, the group explained the first observation, the problems with the conditions, and the improvements planned for the next trial.

    答案の注意:not because A, but because BのBが焦点。

解き直しの焦点:prediction(予測)、observation(観察)、limitation(制約)を混同しないこと。

Passage 3|

Paragraph 1. At the neighborhood culture center, volunteers noticed that first-time visitors sometimes entered through a parking entrance rather than the main public entrance. Both doors were marked on an old map, but the map had been drawn for staff who already knew the building. It included room numbers without explaining which activities were held in those rooms.

Paragraph 2. A group of junior high school students offered to improve the map as part of a community project. Before drawing anything, they spoke with visitors and staff. Some visitors wanted a map that could be understood quickly from the entrance. Others asked for written directions because small symbols were difficult for them to recognize. The group decided to prepare both a simple map and a text-only route guide.

Paragraph 3. The first design used different colors for different floors. During a test, a volunteer pointed out that color alone might not be enough to distinguish the routes. The students therefore added clear words, floor numbers, and symbols with labels. They also found that one stairway was sometimes closed for maintenance, so the final guide instructed visitors to check current notices rather than assume every route would always be available.

Paragraph 4. After the guide was posted, several visitors said they appreciated it. The students did not collect enough data to determine whether the average time needed to reach a room had changed. At their presentation, they explained the improvements they had made and the feedback they had received, while clearly separating those observations from claims they had not tested. Their project reminded them that good design begins with listening to the people who will use it.

答案の注意:the people who will use itをusersと適切に言い換え。
