Read|Paragraph 1

The nature club at Cedar Hill School wanted to learn whether more birds were visiting a small wetland near the town. The club had been keeping informal notes for two years, but different students had used different methods. Some students counted every bird they saw, while others recorded each species only once during a visit. A new member noticed that the numbers could not be compared fairly unless the methods were made clearer. The club therefore designed a simple survey for four Saturday mornings. The students would walk along the same path for forty minutes and write down each sighting, including the time and place. They would also record the number of observers and the weather. The teacher reminded them that a sighting was a record of seeing a bird, not necessarily proof of a different individual bird.

Read|Paragraph 2

On the first Saturday, three students recorded eighteen sightings. They saw a black-and-white bird near a wooden bridge at eight ten, then another bird of the same kind near the same bridge at eight twenty. One student counted them as two separate birds, while another wondered whether they might have seen the same bird twice. There was no photograph clear enough to identify the individual, so the club kept two sightings in its notes but did not claim that two different birds had been present. They also recorded a group of six ducks moving across the water. Because the ducks were visible together at one moment, the students could be more confident that they were six individuals. Their report distinguished what had been directly seen from what the class inferred.

Read|Paragraph 3

During the second visit, five observers recorded twenty-six sightings. The day was sunny, and the students had arrived earlier than they had on the first Saturday. A member announced that bird numbers had increased from eighteen to twenty-six. The teacher explained that this conclusion was too strong. Five people might notice more birds than three people, and arriving earlier might change which species were active. The club had collected more sighting records, but it had not proved that the wetland contained more individual birds. To improve their study, the members compared sightings per observer as a rough classroom indicator. They understood that even this measure would not remove every possible bias, because observers might differ in skill and some birds could be recorded repeatedly.

Read|Paragraph 4

For the third and fourth Saturdays, the club kept the start time and the number of observers the same. Four students visited the wetland from eight to eight forty on both days. They recorded nineteen sightings on the third day and twenty on the fourth. The difference was small, and the students chose not to describe either day as a major increase or decrease. They also checked their notes for entries that might describe the same bird moving between two nearby trees. Sometimes they could identify a repeated sighting, but in other cases the evidence was insufficient. The teacher advised the club to publish the observed counts, the method, and the limits of the data together. A neat chart without an explanation could have made the results seem more certain than they were.

Read|Paragraph 5

At the end of the project, the club wrote a report called ‘What We Observed at the Wetland.’ It contained a table showing the dates, the number of observers, the duration, the weather, and the sighting totals. The students avoided a title such as ‘Bird Population Is Growing Rapidly,’ because their records did not measure population size directly. They suggested that a longer study using more consistent methods might help answer that question in the future. The report also explained that the wetland could be valuable to birds even if the survey had not established an increase in their number. The teacher praised the students for resisting an exciting but unsupported claim. They had learned that accurate English reading requires attention not only to vocabulary but also to the meaning of numbers, limitations, and words such as ‘may,’ ‘might,’ and ‘not necessarily.’

Paragraph 1

Paragraph 2

Paragraph 3

Paragraph 4

Paragraph 5
