Read|Paragraph 1
At North Ridge School, a class prepared a short newsletter about a local river. Their teacher gave them a set of fictional observation notes for an English reading project. According to the notes, eight water samples had been collected at two locations on May 12. The students were told that the samples had been checked for several classroom indicators, but the notes did not include a complete scientific evaluation of the river. One sample had an unusual reading, while the other seven had values within the range expected by the class. The teacher asked the students to write a careful summary for readers who had not seen the original notes. She reminded them that an observation is not automatically proof of a general conclusion. The goal was to explain what was known and what remained uncertain.

Read|Paragraph 2
One group used an automatic writing tool to create a first draft of the summary. The draft began, ‘Tests proved that the entire river was unsafe on May 12.’ Several students thought this sentence sounded clear and impressive. However, Yui compared it with the observation notes and found two problems. First, the notes contained only eight samples from two locations; they did not describe every part of the river. Second, an unusual value on one classroom indicator did not by itself establish whether the water was safe or unsafe. The group replaced ‘proved’ with a more limited phrase and removed the claim about the entire river. They wrote, ‘One of eight classroom samples showed an unusual value, but the notes do not establish the condition of the river as a whole.’ The sentence was less dramatic, but it matched the evidence.

Read|Paragraph 3
The group then checked the dates in another paragraph of the automatic draft. It claimed that the students had repeated the tests on May 19 and had found the same result. In the original notes, May 19 was only a proposed date for a second visit. There was no record that the visit had actually taken place. Ken suggested keeping the sentence because a second test seemed likely, but the teacher disagreed. Something that might happen was not the same as something that had happened. The students marked the second visit as ‘planned, not completed’ and removed the invented result. They also noticed that the automatic draft had changed ‘a student noticed a strong smell’ into ‘all students reported a strong smell.’ They corrected the subject because the original note mentioned only one observer.

Read|Paragraph 4
Before publishing the newsletter, each group created a small table with three columns: exact statements from the notes, reasonable interpretations, and statements that could not be supported. For example, ‘eight samples were collected’ belonged in the first column. ‘The group may need a second visit’ was an interpretation, because the notes mentioned a possible next step. ‘The river was definitely dangerous’ belonged in the third column. The students then rewrote their summary without copying the notes word for word. They kept the important numbers and the distinction between observations and conclusions. A classmate checked every sentence against the original source, not merely against the automatically generated draft. This process took longer than accepting the first answer, but it reduced the chance of publishing claims that the source did not justify.

Read|Paragraph 5
At the presentation, the teacher asked whether automatic writing tools should be forbidden. Yui answered that the class had not been testing whether a tool was always good or always bad. They had been practicing a different skill: making a claim no stronger than the evidence allowed. A tool could suggest useful wording, but the writer still had to check dates, numbers, people, and conditions before publishing. The class showed two versions of the same paragraph so visitors could see how a confident sentence might become an accurate one after correction. Their final report did not declare the river safe or unsafe. Instead, it explained the limits of the small classroom exercise and suggested what information a future investigation would need. The teacher said that careful reading is not simply finding answers; it is also recognizing what cannot yet be answered.

Paragraph 1
Paragraph 2
Paragraph 3
Paragraph 4
Paragraph 5
