The Borrowed Lantern(760 words)

[P1] Reina promised her classmates she would find a story for their school reading festival. It was only ten days away, and the students wanted to display a story by someone who had once attended the school. Ms. Arai, the librarian, showed Reina and Daichi a box of papers from an old writing club. Most were ordinary exercises, but an orange folder contained two versions of a story called The Borrowed Lantern. Both carried the name Nao Kido and the year 2012. Neither was clearly labeled as the final version.

[P2] The story described a child who borrowed a lantern from the village watchman during a storm. The child wanted to help an elderly neighbor return home safely. After the storm, the child discovered that the lantern’s handle was damaged. In the first version, the child kept it at home, hoping to repair the handle before returning it. In the second version, the child returned the lantern immediately and asked the watchman to help repair it. Reina thought the first ending emphasized personal responsibility, while the second suggested that asking for help could also be responsible.

[P3] Daichi noticed April 11 stamped on the back of the first version. The second version had April 9 written near the title. ‘The first one must be final because its date is later,’ he said. Reina almost agreed, but she examined the stamp. The words RECEIVED BY LIBRARY were printed around it. April 11 could have been the day the library received the paper, not the day Nao wrote it. Nobody had explained what April 9 meant. Reina realized that dates were useful only when readers understood what events they referred to.

[P4] Inside the folder they found a note about a club reading day. It said that a version in which the child asked for the watchman’s help had been read aloud on April 14. Daichi pointed to the second ending, but the note did not say that it had been published or selected as the final text. Another sheet contained the words ‘Ask Nao before showing this to visitors.’ The message had no signature. The new information made the second version interesting, but it did not settle the question of the author’s final intention.

[P5] The students had planned to print the entire story on a display board. Ms. Arai explained that keeping papers in a school archive did not automatically give the festival team permission to publish the writer’s work. She tried the contact address written in the old club records, but it no longer worked. The class could not reach Nao before the festival. Daichi felt disappointed because he had spent hours making a title card. He feared that an empty board would make their work seem wasted. Reina understood his feelings but did not want to make an unsupported claim.

[P6] That evening Reina divided a notebook page into two columns. One said What We Know: the writer’s name on both papers, the two endings, the receiving stamp, and the reading-day note. The other said What We Cannot Prove: Nao’s final choice, the meaning of April 9, and permission to print the full story. Daichi read the columns the next morning. ‘Maybe the display can show the questions instead of pretending we know every answer,’ he suggested. He was smiling again. Reina agreed that uncertainty could be explained without being turned into a fact.

[P7] They changed the plan. Instead of copying the manuscript, they wrote their own short descriptions of the two endings and prepared a timeline of documented dates. Their heading became A Question from an Old Folder rather than Nao’s Final Story. They placed blank cards nearby, asking visitors which choice they would make if they borrowed a lantern. Ms. Arai checked that the summaries were original and the uncertainties were clearly marked. Daichi reused his beautiful title card by turning it over and writing the new heading on its back. The display was ready before the festival.

[P8] At the festival, thirty visitors left cards. Twelve preferred repairing the lantern before returning it, ten would ask the watchman for help, and eight were unsure. A young visitor offered a third idea: explain the damage and ask what the watchman wanted. Reina liked this suggestion but did not add it to the story’s endings because it came from a visitor, not Nao. The students reported the numbers as responses from thirty visitors, not as the choices of every reader. They left a space for a future message from Nao. They still did not know her final choice, but their exhibit encouraged honest discussion.

did not automatically give permissionは資料を保管することと公開の許可が別であることを示します。
