最重要の誤用｜On the contrary は単なる「一方で」ではない
不自然：Our school is large. On the contrary, it is far from the station. ／ 自然：Our school is large. On the other hand, it is far from the station. 大きさと駅からの距離は、どちらも同時に成立します。ここで相手の発言を否定していないため、on the contraryは適切ではありません。
自然：The plan was not unsuccessful. On the contrary, it achieved more than we expected. 「失敗だった」という評価を否定して「むしろ予想以上」と補強するのでon the contraryを使います。ただし、実際の英語でby contrastとin contrastの使い分けには重なる部分があり、単一の訳語だけで機械的に正誤を決めないことが大切です。

理由・判断基準：広さも距離も同時に成り立つ、同じ対象の長所と短所を対比する。

和訳・意味：最初の案は失敗どころか、目標を上回った。
理由・判断基準：『失敗ではない』をさらに打ち消して、むしろ成功したと強調する。

①意味を判定：二つとも成り立つならon the other hand、元の主張を否定するならon the contrary、二つの対象の差を示すならby contrast。②構文を確認：in contrast to＋名詞句と、by contrast,＋文の形を区別。③根拠を点検：数字は原文から計算し、比較から勝手な因果・結論を作らない。
