結論｜numberは数えられる対象の個数・人数、amountは量、totalは合計、rat
numberは数えられる対象の個数・人数、amountは量、totalは合計、rateは時間当たりや割合など一定の基準での率、proportionは全体に占める部分の比率です。数量を含むStage3 Read・Projectで何を分母にした数字なのか説明できることが重要です。
対象：NEW TREASURE Stage3でGrammar in Use、Read、学校の英作文を学ぶ中高一貫校の中3生。学校の採用版・授業進度を優先してください。慶英会独自制作の練習であり、出版社の本文や解答を転載していません。
使い分けの4原則
1. the number of＋複数名詞は主語の核がnumberで通常単数動詞：The number of visitors is rising.
2. the amount of＋不可算名詞：the amount of water。可算個数にはthe number of books。
3. the total number / total amountは合計値。The total was fifty.（合計50）。totalは名詞・形容詞・動詞としても使える。
4. rateやproportionは分母・時間・対象の定義が必要。an attendance rate（出席率）、the proportion of respondents（回答者の割合）。

問題C｜初見Read
The student council reviewed how much paper the school used in one month. It counted the number of printed notices and measured the amount of paper used for posters. The total number of notices was two hundred. In a short survey, sixty students replied, and eighteen said they preferred printed notices. The proportion of respondents who preferred paper was therefore thirty percent. However, the council did not say that thirty percent of all students preferred paper, because the survey had not included everyone. The teacher also asked the students to separate the total number of pages printed from the printing rate per day. A large monthly total might result from many active days rather than unusually high printing on a single day.
全文和訳
生徒会は1か月の学校の紙使用量を調べた。印刷通知の件数を数え、ポスターに使った紙の量を測った。通知は合計200件だった。短い調査では60人が回答し、18人は紙の通知を好んだ。したがって回答者に占める割合は30％だったが、全校生徒の30％とは言わなかった。全員を調査していないからである。先生は月間の印刷ページ総数と1日当たりの印刷率も区別するよう求めた。月間合計が大きくても、1日の印刷が異常に多いのではなく稼働日数が多いだけかもしれなかった。

FAQ
numberとamountは絶対に交換できませんか？
一般的な数量表現では可算・不可算を基準にします。ただしamount of peopleのような口語的用法も見られます。学校英作文ではnumber of peopleを優先するのが無難です。
