NEW TREASURE Stage3の英作文でmake sure to do・make sure that …・check whether …・confirm that …を混同すると、文法だけでなく確認の度合いまで変わります。make sure to doは「確実に行う」、make sure thatは「〜であることを確実にする」、check whetherは「〜かどうか調べる」、confirm thatは「〜だと確認する」です。慶英会独自の40問・全解答・和訳と独自Read2題で、確認する予定・確認済み・未確定の違いを練習します。

① make sure toとmake sure thatの違い
Make sure to save the file. は保存する行動を忘れないよう指示します。Make sure that the file is saved. は保存済みの状態を確実にするよう求めます。後者も実際に保存したかは指示の後の行動で確かめます。
② check whetherは「どちらか調べる」
We checked whether the room was available. は部屋が使用可能かという二択を調べる表現です。文だけで結果が示されなければ、使用可能だったと勝手に断定しません。whetherはifで言い換えられる場合もあります。
③ confirm thatは確認できた内容を述べる
The office confirmed that the room was available. なら事務室が使用可能と確認した内容を報告します。ただし誰から確認されたかという情報源の信頼性や、あとで状況が変わったかは別の問題です。
④ verifyは情報の正しさを検証する
We verified the measurements with another device. は別の装置で測定値を検証したこと。We planned to verify the measurements. は検証する予定にとどまり、検証済みと書けません。verifyは確認対象を直接目的語に取ります。
⑤ 質問したこと・確認したこと・達成したことを分ける
We sent the message. という送付記録があっても、We confirmed that everyone received it. という全員受信の確認とは異なります。Step5のReadでは計画・送付・配信確認・読了確認までの段階を分けて答えましょう。

It planned to contact the two students directly. The minutes separated the confirmed room number, the attempted delivery check and the remaining uncertainty.
