Walking to school one morning, Aya noticed that many students were waiting near a busy crossing. Some used a shorter road beside the station, while others preferred a longer road with a traffic light. Aya wondered whether the shortest route was also the safest one. She asked her science teacher if a small survey would help the student council make a recommendation.
Having received permission, Aya and two classmates observed both roads for five mornings. They counted the number of people using each route but did not record anyone’s name. The shorter road was about 600 meters long, and the longer road was about 750 meters long. The longer route had a signal and wider pavement. However, it also took more time to walk.
The team asked forty students which route they preferred. Twenty-four chose the shorter route, twelve chose the longer route, and four had no preference. Not all students who preferred the shorter route thought it was safer; some simply wanted to arrive earlier. None of the respondents claimed that the longer route was completely free of risk.
The more carefully the group compared the information, the less willing it became to declare one route best for everyone. A teacher reminded them that a single observation could not establish a permanent rule. Only after they examined the different reasons did the students understand why one simple ranking was misleading.
It was the variety of students’ needs that changed their final recommendation. Instead of telling everyone to use the same road, they proposed clearer signs near the crossing and a short guide explaining the advantages and disadvantages of both routes. Their report concluded that a useful recommendation should help students make informed decisions without pretending that all circumstances were identical.

On the morning of a school speech contest, Mika opened her laptop and found that the latest version of her speech had disappeared. Having spent several evenings preparing it, she felt as if all her effort had been wasted. The contest would begin in three hours, and her printed notes were from an earlier draft.
Mika wished she had saved an additional copy the night before. If she had done so, she would have been able to restore the speech immediately. Instead, she asked her friend Jun to help. Jun found an older version in a shared folder and suggested comparing it with the notes that Mika had written by hand.
As they worked, Mika noticed that the older draft contained most of her main ideas. She had changed several examples, but the argument itself was still clear. Jun advised her not to rewrite every sentence. The more time she spent worrying about minor details, the less time she would have to practice speaking.
Although she still felt nervous, Mika produced a revised speech in an hour. She used a short conclusion that she could remember without reading. It was Jun’s calm advice that helped her focus on the essential message. Only when she began practicing aloud did she notice a sentence that sounded unnatural, and she replaced it with a simpler one.
During the contest, Mika spoke clearly and answered the judges’ questions. She did not win the top prize, but she received positive feedback on her organization and delivery. Writing about the experience later, she used the sentence, ‘Never have I been so relieved to finish a speech.’ She understood that preparation was important, but that the ability to adapt when something went wrong mattered too.

Having received … ⑤Only after / Only when / Neverの倒置は助動詞の位置を確認します。
Q. Not allとNoneは同じ意味ですか?
違います。Not all students agreed. None of the students agreed.
