NEW TREASURE（ニュートレジャー）Third Edition Stage 3 Lesson 10では「さまざまな比較表現」として、比較級・原級・最上級の発展的な使い方を学びます。Stage 1で学んだtaller than、as tall as、the tallestだけでは、「The more you practice, the better you get.」「This city is twice as large as that one.」「no more than」と「not more than」などの問題に対応しきれません。中高一貫校の定期テストでは、比較表現の語順、意味の強さ、数量表現を同時に問う設問が頻出しやすいため、本記事では新たに独自演習36問と全解答を作成しました。Z会の2026年版公式シラバスに対応し、原級・比較級・最上級を用いた発展表現を、書き換え・整序・英作文まで一貫して解説します。採用版と試験範囲は学校の資料を優先してください。
結論：比較の発展は「何倍」「変化に応じた変化」「差」「数量の上限・下限」を見分ける
- 倍数：This room is twice as large as that one.（この部屋はあの部屋の2倍の広さだ）。
- 比例：The more you read, the more you learn.（読めば読むほど多くを学ぶ）。
- 変化：It is getting colder and colder.（ますます寒くなっている）。
- 差：This question is much more difficult than that one.（この問題はあの問題よりずっと難しい）。
- 数量：There are not more than ten seats.（座席は10席を超えない）。
- 最上級：This is by far the most useful guide.（これは群を抜いて役立つ案内だ）。
「the＋比較級」「no more than」「not less than」などは、見慣れた比較級と意味が異なります。形を暗記するだけでなく、数量がいくつまで許されるか、どちらが大きいか、元の文と同じ論理的意味かを判断してください。
The＋比較級…, the＋比較級…：〜すればするほど
The harder you work, the better your results become.（努力すればするほど結果がよくなる）。The earlier you start, the more time you have.（早く始めるほど時間が多く取れる）。比較級を含む節を二つ並べ、前者に応じて後者の程度が変わることを表します。「the」は通常の最上級につくtheとは別の働きなので、the more … the more …の対応を一まとまりで覚えましょう。
The more carefully you read, the fewer mistakes you make.（注意深く読むほどミスが少なくなる）のように、副詞の比較級more carefullyや少ない数を表すfewerも使えます。fewerは数えられる複数名詞、lessは量を表す不可算名詞と合わせるのが基本です。
比較級＋and＋比較級：ますます〜
The weather is getting warmer and warmer.（ますます暖かくなっている）。The problem is becoming more and more complicated.（問題はますます複雑になっている）。短い形容詞などではwarmer and warmer、moreを使う形ではmore and more complicatedのようにします。誤：more complicated and more complicatedは文脈によって可能ですが、定期テストの指定構文ではmore and more complicatedが一般的です。
twice / three times as … as：倍数表現の語順
This bag is twice as heavy as that one.（このかばんはあのかばんの2倍の重さです）。Our school has three times as many students as theirs.（私たちの学校には相手の学校の3倍の生徒がいる）。形は倍数＋as＋原級＋asです。many＋複数名詞、much＋不可算名詞の違いにも注意。『twice more heavy』より、試験ではtwice as heavy asを基本形として書きましょう。
no more than・not more thanの違い
no more than fiveは、典型的な学校英語では『たった5つ（しかない）』のように、数量の少なさを強調する表現です。文脈によっては『最大でも5つ』という上限を述べる用法もあります。一方、not more than fiveは『5つを超えない／多くても5つ』という数量の上限を比較的中立的に示します。単に『5つ以下』と判断するだけでなく、話し手が少なさを強調しているかを読み取ることが重要です。数を厳密に5つと明示するならexactly fiveを使います。
no less than・not less thanの違い
no less than one hundred peopleは『なんと100人もの人』のように多さを強調します。not less than one hundred peopleは『100人以上』という下限を表します。no less thanに『少なくとも』の論理的意味が含まれる場合でも、典型的な学校英語では強調される多さに注目するのがポイントです。『noを付けるといつも否定』という理解では読み違えます。
比較級の強調：much・far・even・a littleを使う
She is much taller than I am.（彼女は私よりずっと背が高い）。This book is far more interesting than that one.（この本はあの本よりはるかに面白い）。He is a little older than his brother.（少し年上だ）。比較級の前にmuch、far、even、a littleなどを置き、差を表します。通常の学校英語ではvery tallerやvery more expensiveとはしません。
原級を使うas … as possibleとas … as S can
Please come as early as possible.（できるだけ早く来てください）。Please come as early as you can.もほぼ同じ依頼を表せます。as soon as possibleは頻出表現ですが、as soon asは文脈によって『〜するとすぐに』という接続詞のまとまりにもなるため、どの形で使われているか区別してください。
比較級を使う最上級相当の表現
Ken is the tallest student in his class. → No other student in his class is as tall as Ken.（同じクラスでケンほど背の高い生徒はいない）。またKen is taller than any other student in his class.とも表せます。any otherを忘れてKen is taller than any student in his class.とすると、ケン自身もそのクラスの生徒に含まれるため比較対象に矛盾が生じやすいことに注意してください。
最上級の発展：one of the most、the＋序数＋最上級
Tokyo is one of the largest cities in the world.（東京は世界でも最大級の都市の一つです）。one of the＋最上級＋複数名詞という語順を確認しましょう。That is the second highest mountain in this country.（それはこの国で2番目に高い山です）では、the＋序数＋最上級＋単数名詞という形です。one of the most important ideaと単数にしないようにします。
よくある誤文5パターン
- 誤：More you read, more you learn. → 正：The more you read, the more you learn.
- 誤：The days are getting more cold and more cold. → 正：… colder and colder.
- 誤：This river is twice long as that one. → 正：… twice as long as that one.
- 誤：My school has three times as much students as yours. → 正：… three times as many students as yours.
- 誤：She is very taller than her sister. → 正：She is much taller than her sister.
【前提知識を確認｜原級・比較級から発展比較へ】Stage 1のas tall as …（同じくらい背が高い）、taller than …（より背が高い）を理解すると、Stage 3のtwice as tall as …（2倍の高さ）やThe more you practice, the better you become.（練習するほど上達する）へ進めます。基本形のas＋原級＋asやthanの位置で迷う場合は、Stage 1の比較級・最上級32問を先に確認しましょう。

- The more：比例構文。
- colder and colder：比較級の反復。
- more and more：長い形容詞の程度の変化。
- twice as heavy as：倍数＋as＋原級＋as。
- three times as many：booksは可算複数。

- 比較の対象：as … asの比較先は何か、thanの後は誰／何か確認。
- 数量：twice、three times、many/much、no/not more・lessを区別。
- 語順：The more …, the better …／one of the＋最上級＋複数名詞を固定。
- 程度：much/far/a littleと比較級の相性を確認し、very moreを避ける。

Q. 比較級にveryを使ってはいけませんか？ A. 通常の学校英語ではmuch taller、far more difficultなどを用います。very tallerは誤りです。
Q. twice as … asは何倍ですか？ A. 基準の2倍です。twice as heavy asなら重さが2倍という意味です。
Q. no more thanとnot more thanは同じですか？ A. 数量の上限という点は似ていますが、no more thanには少なさへの驚き・評価が込められやすく、not more thanは比較的中立的に『超えない』という限度を示します。
