中高一貫校の定期考査では、単にbecauseやalthoughの意味を答えるだけでなく、「not only A but also B」の主語と動詞の一致、「so … that」と「such … that」の語順、「even though」と「even if」の意味の違い、「unless」と条件のif節の時制などが問われます。
Not only Ken but also his friends are coming.(ケンだけでなく友人たちも来る)。
The book was so interesting that I read it twice.(とても面白かったので二度読んだ)。
I spoke slowly so that everyone could understand me.(全員が理解できるようにゆっくり話した)。
Even though he was tired, he helped us.(疲れていたのに手伝った)。
Unless you hurry, you will miss the train.(急がなければ列車に乗り遅れる)。
both A and B:二者を並列に結ぶ
Both Ken and Yuki are good at English.(ケンもユキも英語が得意だ)。both A and Bで主語を作ると通常は複数扱いです。 「Both Ken and Yuki is …」
not only A but also B:動詞の一致を決める
Not only Ken but also his friends are coming.(ケンだけでなく友人たちも来る)。Not only his friends but also Ken is coming. AとBの語順が逆になるとare/isが変わります。
Not only did he apologize, but he also offered to help. Not only Ken but also Yuki …
either A or B・neither A nor B:どちらか/どちらも〜ない
Either you or I am responsible.(あなたか私のどちらかが責任を負う)。Neither Ken nor his brothers are at home.(ケンも兄弟たちも家にいない)。
The movie was so exciting that I watched it again.(映画はとても面白く、もう一度見た)。He ran so quickly that I couldn’t catch him.(とても速く走ったので追い付けなかった)。
such+(a/an)+形容詞+名詞+that
It was such an interesting book that I read it in one day.(非常に面白い本だったので一日で読んだ)。They were such difficult questions that nobody answered them.(非常に難しい質問だったので誰も答えられなかった)。so difficult thatは形容詞を中心にした構造ですが、such a difficult question thatは単数名詞を含みます。
so many students that …、so much homework that …
目的のso that:can / couldを用いて「〜できるように」
I wrote the instructions clearly so that everyone could follow them.(全員が従えるように、説明を明確に書いた)。
Although it was raining, we went for a walk.(雨が降っていたのに散歩に行った)。Even though he was sick, he went to school.(病気だったのに学校へ行った)。
even if:「仮に〜だとしても」
Even if it rains tomorrow, we will hold the event indoors.(仮に明日雨が降っても、イベントは屋内で開催する)。 Even though it is raining, …
despite / in spite ofは接続詞ではなく前置詞
Although he was tired, he continued working.(疲れていたが働き続けた)。→ Despite being tired, he continued working.(疲れていたにもかかわらず働き続けた)。 despite the fact that he was tiredという形なら可能です。
becauseとbecause of:理由の節と名詞句
Because it rained, the game was canceled. / Because of the rain, the game was canceled.。becauseの後ろはit rainedという節、because ofの後ろはthe rainという名詞句です。
unless:if … notに近い条件を表す
Unless you study, you won’t pass the test.(勉強しない限り合格しない)。 If you don’t study, you won’t pass the test.
as long as・provided that:条件が満たされる限り
You may borrow the book as long as you return it by Friday.(金曜までに返すなら本を借りてもよい)。Provided that you follow the rules, you can join the event.(規則を守るという条件なら参加できる)。
if・unless・as soon asなどの時間・条件節と未来形
If it rains tomorrow, we’ll stay home.(明日雨が降ったら家にいる)。As soon as she arrives, I’ll call you.(彼女が到着したらすぐ電話する)。 I don’t know if it will rain tomorrow.
Not only his friends but also Ken are here. Ken is here.
The book was such interesting that … The book was so interesting that …(名詞がない)。
It was so a difficult test that … It was such a difficult test that …。
Despite he was tired, he worked. Although he was tired, he worked. / Despite being tired, he worked.

Because it was raining, we stayed home. Because of the rain, we stayed home.
