NEW TREASURE（ニュートレジャー）Stage 1 Lesson 12の「比較」で点を落とす中高一貫校生は、比較級や最上級の単語を暗記できていても、than・as・theの位置、形容詞の変化、日本語からの英作文で迷いがちです。たとえば「AはBより大きい」「AはBと同じくらい大きい」「Aは3つの中で最も大きい」は、英文の骨組みがそれぞれ違います。本記事ではThird Editionの公式シラバスに沿って原級・比較級・最上級を区別し、初見演習32問と解答解説、誤答診断、定期テスト前の復習計画をまとめます。学校によって教材の版や進度が異なるため、必ず学校の試験範囲表を優先してください。

最初に結論：比較は「同じ・より・最も」の3種類

• 原級：Aki is as tall as Ken.（アキはケンと同じくらい背が高い）。基本形はas＋形容詞・副詞の原級＋as。
• 比較級：Aki is taller than Ken.（アキはケンより背が高い）。基本形は比較級＋than。
• 最上級：Aki is the tallest of the three.（アキは3人の中で最も背が高い）。基本形はthe＋最上級＋比較範囲。

文法問題で迷ったら、まず日本語の「同じくらい」「〜より」「いちばん」を丸で囲みます。その次に形容詞が1語で変化するか、more/mostを前に置くかを決めます。最後にthan、as、the、in/ofといった語を確認してください。

原級：as … as と not as … as を正確に書く

The red bag is as heavy as the blue bag.（赤いかばんは青いかばんと同じくらい重い）。このasとasの間に置くのは原級heavyです。as heavier asは不可。否定ならThe red bag is not as heavy as the blue bag.（青いかばんほど重くない）。not as … asは同じ程度ではないことを表しますが、厳密な数量を示す表現ではないので文脈に注意します。

動詞を説明する副詞にも使えます。He runs as fast as his brother.（兄弟と同じくらい速く走る）。「速い人」のfastだけでなく「速く走る」という動作の比較になっていると気付けると、長文中でも誤読しません。

比較級：-er と more の作り方

• 短い形容詞の基本：tall→taller、small→smaller、long→longer。
• 最後がe：nice→nicer、large→larger。
• 短い母音＋子音など：big→bigger、hot→hotter（通常は最後の子音を重ねる）。
• 子音字＋y：happy→happier、easy→easier。
• 比較的長い語の代表例：interesting→more interesting、difficult→more difficult。
• 不規則：good / well→better、bad→worse、many / much→more、little（量）→less。

more taller、more betterのように、比較級を二重に作らないこと。例：This question is more difficult than that one. は正しく、This question is difficulter … は標準的な形ではありません。語の長さで決める目安には例外もあるので、学校で扱った語形の確認を優先します。

最上級：-est と most、the、比較範囲

The blue box is the largest of the three.（3つの中で青い箱が一番大きい）。This is the most interesting story in this book.（この本の中で最も面白い物語）。単純にmost interestingestと重ねません。比較の対象を示すとき、個々のメンバーを数える集まりにはof the three / of all the students、場所・集団の枠にはin our class / in the cityなどがよく使われます。これらは初学者向けの目安であり、常にofとinが機械的に決まるわけではありません。

最上級ではtheがよく使われますが、her best friendのように所有格などがすでに付く場合はtheを重ねません。また副詞の最上級などにはtheが省略される場合があります。学校英作文の基本形を優先して覚えましょう。

Which is …?「2つのうちどちら」「いちばんどれ」

Which is larger, this box or that box?（この箱とあの箱ではどちらが大きいですか）。2つを直接比較する問いなので比較級largerを使います。Which is the largest of the three boxes?（3つの箱のうちどれが一番大きいですか）。3つ以上の中で頂点を問うので最上級を使います。Which is more useful, a pencil or a pen?のようにmoreを使う比較級も同じ仕組みです。

more than・the most を機械的に直訳しない

比較級のthanは「〜より」という比較の相手を示しますが、more than ten peopleのmore thanは「10人を超える人数」という数量表現です。またI like music better than sports.（スポーツより音楽が好き）はlike A better than Bの形で、形容詞ではなく好みの程度を比べています。形だけでなく文の動詞や目的語まで確認しましょう。

英作文の5つの誤答を先に直す

• 誤：She is more tall than I am. → 正：She is taller than I am.
• 誤：This book is as more interesting as that one. → 正：This book is as interesting as that one.
• 誤：He is the most tallest in our class. → 正：He is the tallest in our class.
• 誤：My bag is heavyer than yours. → 正：My bag is heavier than yours.
• 誤：Which is the bigger, a dog or a cat? → 基本形：Which is bigger, a dog or a cat?（2つの比較。the bigger of the twoは別の正しい構文）。

括弧内の語を文に合う形にします。必要な場合はmore / most / the / than / asなども補いましょう。指定のある設問では、その条件に従ってください。

意味・語順・文法が自然なら別解も可。

解く順序を固定すると誤答が減る

• ①問題の日本語または文脈を見て、「同じ・より・最も」のどれか決める。
• ②形容詞・副詞を原級、比較級、最上級のどれに変えるか決める。
• ③語形は1語変化（-er/-est）かmore/mostか、例外か確認する。
• ④than / as … as / the / of / inを必要な位置に入れる。
• ⑤主語と動詞を完成させたあと、全文を日本語に戻して意味を検証する。

中高一貫校で起こる3つのつまずきと対策

語形だけを暗記している：good-better-bestは言えるのにas good asが書けない場合、比較の文型理解が弱い可能性があります。語形テストと英作文を分けて練習してください。原級と比較級を混同する：not as … as と … -er than を2文ずつセットで比べましょう。長文で失点する：本文のthanがどの語とどの語を比較しているか、線を引いて可視化します。

テスト7日前からの学習スケジュール

• 7日前：学校の範囲表を確認し、原級・比較級・最上級の重要例文を仕分け。
• 6日前：-er/-est、more/most、good-better-bestなどの語形を反復。
• 5日前：as … asとnot as … asのみで英作文。
• 4日前：thanを使う比較級とWhich …?の疑問文を練習。
• 3日前：the最上級＋of/inの例文を作る。
• 2日前：初見32問を解き、誤答の原因を分類。
• 前日：誤答した設問だけを白紙で解き直し、全文の意味を説明。

保護者向け：3分で確認できる質問

①This box is bigger than that box.は何と何を比べている？ ②as big asの真ん中は原級？比較級？ ③goodの比較級・最上級は？ の3問を、紙を見ずに答えられるか確かめてください。できなければ問題数を増やす前に基本パターンを整理します。答えられるのに英作文ができない場合は日本語から全文を組み立てる練習を増やします。

よくある質問

Q. 比較級を使うときthanは必ず必要ですか？ A. A is taller than Bのような基本構文では使いますが、It is getting colder.（だんだん寒くなっている）のように比較対象を明示しない用法もあります。試験範囲に合わせて習得してください。

Q. 最上級は必ずtheを使いますか？ A. 名詞を修飾する基本構文ではよく使いますが、her best friendなど所有格がある場合や副詞の最上級など、例外もあります。

Q. Stage 1 Lesson 12の内容はすべての学校で同じですか？ A. Third Editionの公式シラバスに対応する説明です。学校が別版や独自の指導順序を使用している場合は、学校の目次・配布教材が優先です。

まとめ：比較表現を英文で使えるようにする

比較の単元は語形暗記だけでなく、同等・比較級・最上級の三つの構文を使い分けることが得点につながります。まず32問を解き、語形・語順・比較対象の指定のどこに弱点があるか記録しましょう。次の日に同じ英文を白紙から書ける状態を目指すことが重要です。
