|---|---|---|
| can’t have done | 〜したはずがない(強い否定の推量) | He can’t have entered the closed room. |
| may not have done | 〜しなかったかもしれない | She may not have read the notice. |
| shouldn’t have done | 〜すべきではなかった | We shouldn’t have shared the details. |
| couldn’t have done | 〜できなかっただろう/したはずがない | We couldn’t have run it without power. |
can’t haveとcouldn’t haveは重なる文脈がある
He can’t have entered the room.とHe couldn’t have entered the room.
She may not have read the email. She didn’t read the email.
shouldn’t haveとdidn’t have toは同じではない
We shouldn’t have shared the address. We didn’t have to share it.

A science club prepared a video demonstration for visiting pupils. The projector was disconnected from power throughout the period from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. A member later wrote that the club had shown the video on that projector at 2:30. The teacher pointed out that this could not have happened using that device because it had no power at the time. Another member admitted that she had shared a private contact list in a public message while trying to arrange a new demonstration. She said, “I shouldn’t have shared those details.” The teacher helped the club remove the information and explained the school’s privacy rules. The committee then sent an updated notice through the approved communication system. However, several students had not replied, so the club could not be certain that everyone had seen the correction. The teacher said that some pupils may not have read the message yet, but this was a possibility, not a confirmed fact. The members decided to check the replies and inspect the projector before making another announcement. The report separated an action that was impossible, an action that should not have been taken and an event that might not have happened.

A student council sent twenty invitations for an English workshop. By Thursday morning, twelve students had replied and eight had not. One organizer wrote that the remaining eight students had definitely refused to join. Another member disagreed and said that some of them may not have read the email yet. Others might have read it but forgotten to reply. The committee could not know which explanation was correct without checking. A third student tried to contact the group and mistakenly posted one pupil’s private email address on a public page. When the mistake was noticed, the chairperson said that the address should not have been shared without permission. The club removed it and used the official school system instead. One member suggested that the class could not have reached all the invited students because eight had not replied. The teacher explained that a missing reply did not prove a message had failed to arrive. The class recorded the confirmed replies separately from possible reasons for silence. It planned to send a reminder and ask for a clear response before announcing the final number of participants. No conclusion about the eight unanswered invitations had been confirmed.
Q37. Read B|
