the fact thatとdespite the fact thatは何が違う？

despiteの後ろに節を直接置かない
Despite it was raining は学校英作文で避けるべき語順です。Despite the rain、Despite being tired、Despite the fact that it was raining のいずれかを文脈に合わせて選びます。Cambridge Grammarもdespiteとin spite ofの後ろにそのままthat節を置かないことを説明しています。
the fact that（内容節）とthe fact that remains（関係節）を区別
The fact that she arrived late surprised us. のthatは「彼女が遅れたという事実」の内容を導きます。一方、The fact that remains is that the cause is unknown. の最初のthatはfactを修飾する関係代名詞です。さらに The fact remains that the cause is unknown. では「原因が不明であるという事実が残る」となります。語順が変わるため同一視しません。
事実と因果を混同しない
The fact that attendance increased は出席人数の増加を話し手が事実として扱っていることを示します。しかし「宣伝活動が唯一の原因だった」とは意味しません。英文の主張・観察記録・確認されていない推測を切り分けると、Stage5の論説読解でも安定して答えられます。

Fictional School Reading Survey. The committee distributed fifty questionnaires to students. Thirty-eight were returned, and twelve were not. Despite the fact that twelve responses were missing, the committee published a short preliminary report. The report clearly stated the response count, but one member claimed that the results described the opinions of every student. The chair replied, “We cannot ignore the fact that not everyone responded.” The preliminary report did not establish whether the non-respondents shared the same views as those who answered. The committee decided to collect further evidence before describing the findings as representative.

Fictional Presentation Event. Neither explanation had been officially verified. The organiser wrote, “The fact remains that the cause of the delay has not been confirmed.” Despite the fact that the start was delayed, all three planned presentations took place. The final record separated the confirmed time difference from visitors’ guesses about its cause.

英文Bの全文和訳
発表会は午後2時開始の予定だったが、実際には2時20分に始まった。コンピューターの故障が遅れの原因だと思う来場者もいれば、来賓が遅刻したと考える来場者もいた。どちらも公式に確認されていなかった。主催者は「遅延の原因は依然として確認されていないという事実が残ります」と記した。開始は遅れたものの、予定していた3つの発表はすべて行われた。最終記録では、確認済みの時刻差と原因についての来場者の推測を分けていた。
