8:The town counted 150 visits, but that did not prove that 150 (people / visits) took part.

A fictional museum tested shorter captions next to eight objects. The original captions contained around 150 words, while the new versions contained around 60 words. The museum hoped that visitors could identify each exhibit’s main point more quickly, but the shorter captions did not replace the full descriptions. Both options were available.

Over one weekend, staff asked 90 visitors which captions they preferred. Fifty said they liked the shorter versions, 25 preferred the longer ones, and 15 were unsure. The staff did not give visitors a comprehension test, and they did not record how many exhibits each person viewed. The survey therefore described preferences, not whether the shorter captions improved learning.

Before making a permanent change, the museum planned to test how accurately visitors could answer questions after reading each format and to ask people with different reading needs for feedback.

15:The survey described preferences, not whether … improved learning.

A fictional high-school science club investigated temperatures in two schoolyard locations. On five selected afternoons, students measured a paved area and an area shaded by trees. In their notebook, the average surface temperature for the paved area was 38 degrees Celsius, compared with 31 degrees for the shaded area.

Some students concluded that planting any tree would always lower the temperature by exactly seven degrees. Their teacher warned them against that conclusion. The locations differed not only in shade but also in surface materials and wind exposure. The observations were taken on five afternoons, not throughout the year. The team had not measured the effect of planting new trees or changes in electricity use.

For the next trial, the club planned to compare more carefully matched surfaces, check the sensors, and repeat readings at different times. The students could report what they observed, but they could not yet isolate the effect of trees.

23:could not yet isolate the effect of trees

A fictional school prepared a short guide in three languages for families who were new to the community. The guide explained classroom locations, school contact details, and how to check event schedules. The translation team used the same source document for all three versions and asked volunteers to check whether names and dates matched.

Just before the guide was printed, the school changed the date of a parent meeting from November 12 to November 19. Two language versions were corrected immediately, but the third version was not updated before printing. Several families who read the third version came to school on the earlier date. The school apologized and issued a corrected notice. It also explained that a translation could be grammatically accurate and still contain outdated information.

For the next edition, the team planned to assign one person to approve dates across all language versions and to display the most recent revision date clearly. It did not claim that the new process would prevent every future error.

A fictional town introduced a bicycle parking area near a train station. Residents could leave their bicycles there free of charge for up to four hours. The town wanted to give visitors another transport option, but it had not yet measured whether the parking area changed the number of cars entering the town centre.

During the first two weeks, the entry counter registered 240 bicycle arrivals. Some people used the area on several days, and the counter did not identify individuals. In a separate survey, 80 people were invited to respond, and 50 answered. Of the 50 respondents, 35 said that the new parking area was convenient, ten were unsure, and five did not think it was convenient.

The town’s report stated that the parking area had been used and that some respondents valued it, but it did not claim that traffic had fallen. The next evaluation would compare vehicle counts before and after the change and consider whether seasonal differences affected the numbers.
