三単現で間違えやすい6つの基本文
- Every student has a book. → every＋可算単数名詞。
- Everyone knows the answer. → everyoneは単数扱い。
- Each of the students has a role. → the studentsの複数形に惑わされない。
- One of my friends is absent. → 主語の中心はone。
- The number of students is twenty. → 数そのものが単数主語。
- A number of students are here. → 多くの生徒がいるという複数。
everyoneは『全員』でも動詞は単数
日本語では多数の人を指すeveryoneですが、英文法ではeveryone is／everyone has／everyone knowsのように単数動詞を使います。all the students are／both students haveとは形が違います。意味上の人数だけで判断せず、主語の中心語を見ることが重要です。
the number ofとa number ofは意味から違う
The number of books is increasing. では『冊数が増えている』という数を表し、isを用います。一方A number of books are missing.は『かなりの数の本がなくなっている』という複数のbooksが中心です。冠詞theとaの違いで文全体の意味と動詞が変わります。
some ofとmost ofは後ろの名詞を確認
Some of the students are here. は複数students。Some of the water is still cold. は不可算water。Most of the information is accurate. も不可算です。some・mostだけを見てisかareかを決めず、ofの後ろの指示対象を確認してください。
There is／There areは何が存在するかで変わる
There is a map on the table.、There are two maps on the table. のように、存在する対象の数でis・areを選びます。会話ではThere’s＋複数名詞も聞かれますが、学校の標準的な筆記問題では複数ならThere areを使いましょう。

5．図書室の英語案内・初見8問（Q33〜Q40）
At a fictional middle school, the English club prepared a library event. Every student received a simple list of tasks. Each of the six volunteers had a different job. Two checked the maps, two prepared signs, and two helped visitors find books. The teacher said that everyone was responsible for checking the room’s safety instructions. Before the event, the teacher counted the books and chairs. The number of available chairs was twenty-four. A number of students were interested in joining the event, but only twelve had registered by the deadline. One of the maps showed an incorrect room number, so Ken corrected it before the guide was printed. On the day of the event, some of the students arrived early. Most of the equipment was already in place, and all of the furniture was clean. The school had provided a small amount of water for speakers. There were three dictionaries on the table, and there was a notebook beside the information desk. After the event, several visitors said the guide was helpful. However, the volunteers did not conduct a learning test. Their report described the number of attendees and the tasks completed. It did not claim that everybody had improved their English simply because the event had been enjoyable.
