最初に覚える黙字5グループ
- kn：know・knife・knee・knock → 語頭のkを読まない。
- wr：write・wrong・wrist・wrap → 語頭のwを読まない。
- -mb：lamb・comb・thumb・climb → 語末のbを読まない。
- t／l：listen・castleのt、walk・talkのlを読まない。
- その他：hour・honestのh、islandのs、sign・designのg、night・lightのgh。
spellとpronounceは別の技能
writeはwを含む綴りですが、発音は/r/から始まります。だからといって書くときにwを省略してriteにしてよいわけではありません。発音ができても綴りを正しく書けるとは限らず、逆も同じです。単語を見る→辞書音声を聞く→自分で言う→正しく書くという順番で練習しましょう。
ghはいつでも黙字ではない
night／lightではghが発音されません。一方、laugh／enoughのghは/f/です。さらにghostではgは発音されます。つまりghという二文字だけを見て『いつも無音』と覚えるのは誤りです。実際の単語単位で辞書音声と照合してください。
signとsignalでgの扱いが変わる
signのgは黙字ですが、signalには/g/の音があります。似た語源や綴りの語を全部同じ発音で読むことはできません。学校のWord Square・Readでは、関連する語が出てきた際にもそれぞれの発音を確認しましょう。
hourとhouseは冠詞も変わる
an hour とa house の違いは、hourのhが発音されず母音から始まる音なのに対し、houseのhは発音されるためです。an honest answer も同様にhが黙字です。黙字の知識は冠詞a／anの判断にも役立ちます。

5．Pronunciationの校内カード作り・英語読解8問（Q33〜Q40）
In a fictional English class, students were preparing word cards for a pronunciation corner. The teacher wrote know, knife, knee, and knock on the board and asked which letter was not pronounced. Hana noticed that these words all began with k in spelling, but the first sound in normal pronunciation was /n/. Ken then grouped write, wrong, wrist, and wrap because the first w was silent.
Next, the group worked with lamb, thumb, comb, and climb. The students checked the final b with a learner’s dictionary instead of adding a /b/ sound because they could see the letter. Another team compared listen and list. Both were familiar words, but the t in listen was silent, while the final t in list was pronounced.
Yui made a card with island and another with sign. A younger student pronounced every written letter, so Yui showed the dictionary entries for the words. The class also compared sign and signal, noticing that the g was silent in one but pronounced in the other. The teacher reminded them not to claim that a letter must always be silent in every related word.
Before the presentation, the students studied gh in night, light, laugh, and enough. They found that gh was silent in the first two but represented an /f/ sound in the other two. The teacher said that learning the spelling patterns was useful, but checking real audio was still important. The class practised the words in short sentences and did not claim that one lesson guaranteed perfect pronunciation.
