NEW TREASURE Stage2のSDGs・海洋プラスチックの英語Readでは、collect(回収)・sort(分別)・reuse(再使用)・recycle(再資源化)を混同しないことが大切です。

At fictional Bayside School, students studied a report about a supervised beach clean-up. Trained adults handled any sharp or unknown objects. A group recorded thirty-six ordinary pieces of litter collected in a designated area: eighteen plastic items, twelve pieces of paper and six metal items. The report did not give the weight of the items. It also did not show where any of them came from. One student said, ‘The beach must have received all eighteen plastic items from the same river.’ The teacher asked for a correction because no source had been identified. The group decided to describe only what was counted and to ask local staff about safe waste-handling procedures. The count was made at one place on one day, so it could not describe every beach or every season. This report, school and all figures were invented.

In a fictional class study, teachers prepared a chart of litter observations along a river. Three equal twenty-meter sections were checked on the same morning. Section A had fourteen visible items, B had eight and C had twelve. The total was thirty-four. Section B had the fewest items among the three sections, while A had the most. However, the team did not measure each item’s size or weight and did not observe the sections on other days. The chart did not say which section was upstream or downstream, so it could not prove that litter moved from A to C. The students suggested a second observation on a different day. The teacher said they would need appropriate safety arrangements before any future field activity. All sections and figures here are imaginary.

A fictional school organized two one-hour festival sessions. Before a reusable-container trial was discussed, the first session recorded thirty disposable packages and sixty visitors. In a later session, the team counted eighteen disposable packages and eighty visitors. The raw number of packages was twelve lower, but the two sessions had different visitor counts and may have had other differences. The team had not checked every reason for the change. A student wrote, ‘The reuse program proved that all visitors created less waste.’ The report was corrected because there was no confirmed causal evidence and no information about every visitor. The organizers had only tested a possible procedure and still needed the school’s formal review before using it again. All figures are invented to teach evidence-based reading.

For a fictional SDG 14 presentation, a class reviewed a record of forty-eight ordinary waste items collected during a supervised school activity. There were twenty-four plastic items, sixteen paper items and eight metal items. Of the twenty-four plastic items, the local practice rules in the story identified twelve as suitable for a separate collection bin. The record did not show whether those twelve items were later processed into new materials. The teacher explained that collection, sorting and completed recycling are different stages. The students learned from a real United Nations Environment Programme report that plastic pollution can harm marine ecosystems. However, the counts in their invented school activity were not UN global statistics. The class wanted to encourage reducing unnecessary waste, reusing suitable items and following verified local sorting instructions, rather than claiming every collected item had been recycled.

Action

I think we should reduce unnecessary plastic waste. Our fictional class counted forty-eight collected items, and twenty-four were plastic. However, these numbers are from one school activity, not a worldwide survey, and they do not show how many items entered the ocean. We should learn the correct local sorting rules and ask responsible adults how to handle waste safely.
