結論:NEW TREASURE(ニュートレジャー)Stage 2 Lesson 10の関係代名詞では、目的格を省略してもtalk to/wait for/sit on/work inなどの前置詞を残す必要があることがあります。The teacher I spoke to、The chair I sat onは自然ですが、The chair I satは必要なonが欠けます。発展的な形式ではthe teacher to whom I spoke/the chair on which I satと書けます。慶英会独自40問・全解答・書き換えを無料公開します。

本記事はNEW TREASURE Stage2 Lesson10のwho・which・whomなどを学んだ生徒向けの発展練習です。前置詞+whom/whichを前に出す形式的な構文は学校によって未習の場合があるため、まず『前置詞を最後に残す』基本形を優先してください。Z会の本文や問題集の例題を転載せず、慶英会が独自に制作しました。

一番大切なルール:前置詞は意味の一部

  • talk to someone:The person I talked to.(話した相手)
  • wait for a train:The train we waited for.(待っていた列車)
  • sit on a chair:The chair I sat on.(座った椅子)
  • work in a room:The room we worked in.(作業した部屋)
  • look at a map:The map I looked at.(見た地図)

目的格who/which/thatの省略と前置詞の省略は別

The person whom I spoke to のwhomは目的格で省略でき、The person I spoke toとなります。しかしspoke to someoneのtoまで消すと意味関係が表しにくくなります。省略できるのは関係代名詞であって、必ず前置詞も省略できるわけではありません。

発展:前置詞を前に置くとthatは使えない

The student to whom I spoke、The room in which we workedは書き言葉などの形式的な形です。to that/in that を前置詞+目的格関係代名詞として使うことはできません。The student that I spoke toのように前置詞を後ろに置く形とは区別します。

whichとwhereを勝手に同じにしない

The room which we studied in はwhichが目的格で前置詞inが残ります。The room where we studied は関係副詞whereを使った別構造です。Stage2でwhereが未習なら、まずwhich/that/省略+inを使って説明できるようにします。

5.学校の交流会の独自英文8問(Q33〜Q40)

In a fictional school, students made a guide for an English exchange event. One student wrote, ‘The room we worked in was near the library.’ Another wrote, ‘The volunteer I spoke to was very helpful.’ Their teacher explained that the prepositions in and to were necessary because the original phrases were ‘work in a room’ and ‘speak to a volunteer’. The object relative pronouns could be omitted, but the relationships still needed to be expressed.

During revision, Ken wrote ‘The chair I sat was comfortable.’ Hana pointed out that he had forgotten the preposition on. They corrected it to ‘The chair I sat on was comfortable.’ The group also compared it with a more formal version, ‘The chair on which I sat was comfortable.’ Both sentences described the same chair, but the second wording was more formal.

The teacher then asked whether the students could write ‘the chair on that I sat’. Yui explained that the relative pronoun that cannot normally follow a fronted preposition in this construction. She also checked the word whom in ‘the teacher to whom I spoke’. This formal sentence referred to a person, whereas ‘in which’ was used with a room or place.

On the day of the event, the guide helped several visitors locate rooms. The volunteers recorded questions and corrected one confusing label. They did not measure whether the guide reduced walking time or improved test scores. Afterwards, the group reviewed how grammar can make information clearer without adding unsupported claims.

  • Q33. What two prepositions were needed in the first paragraph’s examples?
  • Q34. Why did ‘The room we worked in’ keep ‘in’?
  • Q35. What was wrong with ‘The chair I sat was comfortable’?
  • Q36. Give the corrected everyday sentence about the chair.
  • Q37. What was the formal equivalent?
  • Q38. Why was ‘on that I sat’ rejected?
  • Q39. Which formal relative word was used with the teacher?
  • Q40. Did the class measure improved exam scores?
