Reading a Food Label

Students at Cedar Junior High were planning a charity sports day. They wanted to prepare a snack table for volunteers, so they compared two kinds of packaged biscuits. A student named Yui brought a sample of each package to the meeting. The group agreed to read the labels carefully before deciding what to buy.

Package A contained six biscuits. Its label said that one serving was two biscuits and that the package contained three servings. It listed five grams of sugar per serving. The price of one package was 240 yen. Package B contained four biscuits. One serving was also two biscuits, but the package contained two servings. Its label listed seven grams of sugar per serving. One package cost 200 yen.

At first, Ken looked only at the lines for one serving. He said, “Package B has more sugar because seven is greater than five.” Mei reminded him that each whole package contained a different number of servings. She explained that a person eating all six biscuits in Package A would get three servings, or fifteen grams of sugar. Eating the whole Package B would mean two servings, or fourteen grams. The group wrote both calculations on a board.

Then the students considered prices. They calculated that Package A cost eighty yen per serving and Package B cost one hundred yen per serving. However, Yui warned that these figures alone did not tell them everything about taste, ingredients, or which option volunteers would prefer. They had not asked the volunteers for their preferences. The group also decided not to describe one snack as healthier based only on the single sugar figure.

The team planned to offer two biscuits to each volunteer, not one whole package. At that amount, one serving from A contained five grams of sugar, while one serving from B contained seven grams. The students checked that the label figures were per two biscuits in both cases. They also noted that the packages might have other differences not shown in their short comparison table.

The club teacher asked the group to write a clear note for buyers: “Do not confuse per serving with per package. Compare the same amount of food before comparing numbers.” The students prepared a small English and Japanese chart and placed it beside the snacks. They agreed that their next step was to ask volunteers which kind they wanted and to read the full ingredients list before ordering.
