prefer A to B・would prefer to・would ratherの表現一覧
- prefer A to B：I prefer tea to coffee.（物や活動の一般的な好み）
- prefer doing to doing：I prefer reading to watching videos.（活動の比較）
- prefer to do：I prefer to read in the evening.（普段の好み）
- would prefer to do：I’d prefer to read now.（今の選好・丁寧な希望）
- would rather do：I’d rather read now.（would rather＋原形）
- like A better than B：I like tea better than coffee.（preferと異なりthanを使う）。
preferにthanを使ってしまう誤り
I prefer tea than coffee. は学校英語の基本用法として不自然です。I prefer tea to coffee. とします。一方、I like tea better than coffee. は正しい比較表現です。日本語が同じでも英語の動詞が要求する前置詞は違います。
would ratherの後にはtoを置かない
I’d rather stay here. とI’d prefer to stay here. は近い意味ですが、ratherの後ろは原形stay、preferの後ろはto stayが基本です。I’d rather not go. ではnotの位置にも注意してください。
個人の好みを『全員の事実』へ一般化しない
自分が読書を好むことから、学校の全員が読書を好むとは結論できません。In my opinion／I personally prefer／Some students may prefer …などを使い、意見・限定的なフィードバック・検証された事実を区別しましょう。

5．学校の英語授業での好みを読む8問（Q33〜Q40）
At a fictional school, an English class prepared a presentation about students’ favourite ways to learn. Yui said that she generally preferred reading short articles to watching long videos. Ken preferred watching demonstrations to reading detailed instructions. Neither opinion was a rule for everyone; the teacher asked students to explain their personal reasons.
The class planned two activities for a Friday lesson: a group discussion and a quiet reading session. Hana said, ‘I would prefer to read first today,’ because she wanted time to understand the topic before discussing it. Ken answered, ‘I’d rather start with the discussion.’ They used would prefer and would rather to describe choices for a particular situation.
During planning, one student wrote, ‘I prefer reading than listening.’ The teacher corrected it to ‘I prefer reading to listening.’ She then showed the class a different expression: ‘I like reading better than listening.’ Both sentences expressed a comparison, but the words following prefer and like better were different.
After the lesson, the group asked for feedback from eight volunteers. Five said that the quiet reading session had helped them prepare ideas, while three preferred discussing first. The students did not assume the same preferences applied to every student. They prepared a short English report that separated the volunteers’ answers from opinions about which method was best.
