NEW TREASURE（ニュートレジャー）Third Edition Stage 2のLesson 12では、間接疑問文などを学習します。「Where does she live?」は正しく書けても、「Do you know where does she live?」と書いてしまう中高一貫校生は少なくありません。間接疑問文で最優先すべきなのは、疑問詞の後ろを通常の「主語＋動詞」の語順にすることです。本記事では、直接疑問からの変換、疑問詞が主語になる場合、過去形と助動詞、英作文、長文読解での見分け方を、オリジナル30問で学べます。学校での実際の出題範囲は、使用している版・授業進度・配布プリントを優先してください。
結論：間接疑問文は「疑問詞＋主語＋動詞」で考える
直接疑問：Where does your brother live?（お兄さんはどこに住んでいますか）。間接疑問：Do you know where your brother lives?（お兄さんがどこに住んでいるか知っていますか）。where以下はknowの内容を表す節になっています。「where does your brother live」という直接疑問の語順をそのまま入れてはいけません。doesが消え、主語が三人称単数現在形なのでlivesになる点も重要です。
最初の判定法：二つの文を別々に考える
- ①「知っていますか／教えてくれますか／分かりません」など、外側の文を探す：Do you know …? / Can you tell me …? / I don’t know … .
- ②何を尋ねるのか疑問詞を決める：where / when / what / why / how / which など。
- ③疑問詞のあとを平叙文の語順にする：where she lives / when the train leaves / why he was absent。
- ④外側が疑問文なら文全体の最後に?を付ける。I don’t know where she lives.は平叙文なのでピリオド。
直接疑問から書き換える5つの典型例
- Where is the library? → Do you know where the library is? be動詞isを主語libraryの後ろへ。
- When does the train leave? → Can you tell me when the train leaves? doesがなくなり、動詞がleaves。
- What did Ken buy? → I wonder what Ken bought. didは使わず、過去形boughtを維持。
- Why was she angry? → I don’t know why she was angry. wasをsheの後ろへ。
- How can I open this box? → Please tell me how I can open this box. 助動詞canは主語Iの後ろ。
例外に見える形：疑問詞そのものが主語になるとき
Who broke the window?（誰が窓を割ったのか）をI don’t knowに組み込むと、I don’t know who broke the window.となります。whoがその節の主語だからです。『間接疑問文だから必ず疑問詞のあとに別の主語を置く』という規則ではありません。対してWho did she meet?ならI don’t know who she met.です。whoが目的語に相当するため、sheが後ろの主語になります。
間接疑問と「疑問詞＋to不定詞」はどう違う？
I don’t know what I should do.（何をすべきか分からない）とI don’t know what to do.（何をすべきか分からない）は似た意味を表します。ただし、すべての間接疑問を機械的にto不定詞に置換できるわけではありません。I don’t know where he lives. は『彼がどこに住むか』という事実を尋ねるため、通常『I don’t know where to live.（自分がどこに住むべきか分からない）』とは意味が変わります。
誤答パターン6種類
- 誤：Do you know where does she live? → 正：Do you know where she lives?
- 誤：Please tell me when will the bus arrive. → 正：Please tell me when the bus will arrive.
- 誤：I wonder what did he say. → 正：I wonder what he said.
- 誤：I don’t know why is he sad. → 正：I don’t know why he is sad.
- 誤：Can you tell me where is the station? → 正：Can you tell me where the station is?
- 誤：I don’t know who did broke the window. → 正：I don’t know who broke the window.（whoが節の主語なので通常は過去形brokeを用いる。who did breakという強調の形は文法的に成立し、誤り扱いしない）。

括弧内の語句を正しい順序に並べ、英文を完成させてください。文頭の大文字や疑問符も確認しましょう。

- Do you know where he lives?：where＋he＋lives。
- I wonder why she is late.：be動詞isは主語sheの後。
- Can you tell me where the library is?：where＋the library＋is。
- I don’t know when the bus leaves.：when＋the bus＋leaves。
- Please tell me what this word means.：what＋this word＋means。
- Do you remember when the shop closed?：when＋the shop＋closed。
- I wonder whether he knows the answer.：whetherは『〜かどうか』を導く。これはStage 2の中心事項を超える発展例。
- Can you tell me how I can use this computer?：how＋I＋can＋use。
演習B：誤文を正す【9〜16】
- Do you know what is her name?
- I don’t know where does Ken work.
- Can you tell me why was the test difficult?
- I wonder when will they arrive.
- Please tell me what did she buy.
- I know why is this answer wrong.
- Do you know how can we get there?
- I don’t know who did opened the door.〔通常の過去形に直す。didの後の動詞形にも注意〕
Bの解答・誤答ポイント
- Do you know what her name is?：her nameが主語。
- I don’t know where Ken works.：doesを消し、works。
- Can you tell me why the test was difficult?：wasを主語の後へ。
- I wonder when they will arrive.：they willの順。
- Please tell me what she bought.：didを除き、過去形bought。
- I know why this answer is wrong.：this answer isの順。
- Do you know how we can get there?：we canの順。
- I don’t know who opened the door.：whoは節の主語なので、普通の過去形ではopenedを用いる。「did opened」は誤り。強調したい場合の「did open」は文法的に成立するため、did自体を常に誤りと判定しない。Cambridge Dictionary：疑問詞が主語のときの語順・強調を参照。

文意を保ち、指定の書き出しに続けて一文にまとめてください。

- 7日前：直接疑問と間接疑問の例を5組並べ、語順の違いに印を付ける。
- 6日前：be動詞を含む文を10問書き換える。
- 5日前：do / does / didを含む文を10問書き換える。
- 4日前：助動詞can / willを含む文を確認する。
- 3日前：疑問詞が主語になるwho / whatの問題を解く。
- 2日前：日本語のみを見て英作文し、誤答案を分類する。
- 前日：解答を隠して再テスト。学校配布プリントと範囲表の指定も最終確認する。
保護者が確認したい3つのポイント
問題数をこなしたかだけではなく、「なぜdoesが消えたか」「why he is … でisが後ろに来る理由」「whoが主語のときは何が違うか」を口頭で説明できるか確認してください。学習している英文を暗唱できても、主語や動詞を入れ替えると崩れる場合は初見英作文の比率を増やすことを推奨します。
よくある質問
Q. 間接疑問文でも文末に疑問符を付けますか？ 外側がDo you know …? のような疑問文なら付けます。I wonder … . のような平叙文なら付けません。
Q. Do you think who …? と言えますか？ 『誰だと思うか』なら通常Who do you think …? のように疑問詞を前に出す構文を使います。学習初期にはDo you know …? との違いも整理しましょう。
Q. Stage 2 Lesson 12は間接疑問文だけですか？ いいえ。Z会公式のThird Edition教材紹介では、付加疑問や仮定法の基礎も含まれます。この記事はそのうち間接疑問に特化しています。
まとめ：直接疑問の語順をそのまま持ち込まない
間接疑問文は「疑問詞の後ろの主語・動詞の順序」を確認することが最優先です。do / does / didが疑問文を作るために置かれているときは、間接疑問の中で取り除き、動詞を正しい時制に戻します。ただし、who / whatそのものが主語になるときは見た目が異なるため、どの語が節の主語か必ず確認してください。
