NEW TREASURE（ニュートレジャー）Stage 1 Lesson 11のThere is / There areは、単純な構文に見えて定期テストで失点しやすい単元です。「公園が一つあります」と「机が三つあります」でbe動詞が変わり、「水があります」のような数えられない名詞ではisを使います。さらに否定文や疑問文でsome・anyが変化し、How many / How muchの選択も必要です。この記事では、実在の教材本文を引用せず、独自の短文と36問の問題・解答・誤答分析で、暗記から英作文までを支援します。学校が利用する教科書の版や範囲表によって進度は異なるため、授業で指定された例文や範囲を優先してください。

結論：There is / There areは「何がある・いるか」を新しく伝える構文

There is a library near our school.（学校の近くに図書館があります）。There are three libraries in this town.（町に図書館が3つあります）。このThereは普通「そこ」という場所の副詞ではなく、存在を伝える文の一部です。be動詞は、続く名詞が単数・複数・数えられないもののどれかに合わせるのが基本です。

• 単数名詞：There is a cat under the table.
• 複数名詞：There are two cats under the table.
• 数えられない名詞：There is some water in the bottle.
• 否定：There isn’t a cat under the table. / There aren’t any cats under the table.
• 疑問：Is there a cat under the table? / Are there any cats under the table?

isとareの判断は、直後の名詞に注目する

There is an apple on the desk.のan appleは1個なのでis、There are five apples on the desk.ならareです。不可算名詞milk、water、rice、homework、informationなどは、量を表していても単数扱いのためThere is some milk … とします。数える場合はa bottle of water / two bottles of waterのように容器や単位を導入します。

a lot ofは単数・複数を決めるキーワードではありません。There is a lot of rice. とThere are a lot of books.では、その後ろの名詞rice / booksが異なります。英作文で主語が長くなってもこの原則を確認しましょう。

否定文：notとsome / anyを分けて考える

There is a park near here. → There isn’t a park near here.（近くに公園がありません）。There are some eggs in the fridge. → There aren’t any eggs in the fridge.（冷蔵庫に卵がありません）。肯定文のsomeは、否定文や一般的な疑問文ではanyにするのが基本ですが、相手に勧めるWould you like some tea?などは例外です。『疑問・否定なら必ずany』とだけ覚えるのは避けてください。

疑問文：Is there …? / Are there …?

Is there a post office near the station?（駅の近くに郵便局がありますか）。答えはYes, there is. / No, there isn’t.。Are there any books on the desk?（机の上に本がありますか）。答えはYes, there are. / No, there aren’t.。Is there …?への返答をYes, it is.とするのは、この存在構文の一般的な答え方とは異なります。Thereを含めて短く答える練習をしてください。

How manyとHow much：数と量の違い

How many students are there in your class?（クラスには何人の生徒がいますか）。How manyの後ろは数えられる名詞の複数形students。How much water is there in the bottle?（瓶にはどのくらい水がありますか）。How muchの後ろには数えられない名詞water。ここでのmuchは値段を尋ねているのではなく、水の量を尋ねています。

答え方の例：There are thirty students in our class. / There is a little water in the bottle. と答えられます。How many books are there?ならthree booksと具体的に答えても構いません。数詞や量を表す語を選ぶには、対象が可算名詞か不可算名詞かを判定することが重要です。

a few / a little / many / much の整理

• a few：数えられる名詞の複数形と組み合わせる。There are a few chairs in the room.
• a little：数えられない名詞と組み合わせる。There is a little milk in the glass.
• many：数えられる名詞の複数形と組み合わせる。There are many visitors today.
• much：数えられない名詞と組み合わせる。There isn’t much time left.
• a lot of：可算・不可算の両方に使える。There are a lot of trees. / There is a lot of snow.

a fewとfew、a littleとlittleには意味の差があるため、同じものとして覚えないでください。a fewは『少しはある』、fewは『ほとんどない』という否定的な含みになりやすく、a littleとlittleにも同様の区別があります。学校が未習であれば、まずa few / a littleの基本用法から練習しましょう。

There is / There areとIt is / They areの違い

There is a book on the desk.は「机の上に本がある」と本の存在を新しく伝えます。The book is on the desk.は「その本は机の上にある」と、どの本か分かっているものの場所を伝えます。存在を表すThere isは、聞き手がまだ意識していないものを導入する文脈でよく使われます。My book is on the desk.のように、すでに特定されているものについては、その名詞を主語にした文の方が自然な場合が多くなります。

典型的な誤答を5種類に分ける

• 誤：There are a dog in the yard. → 正：There is a dog in the yard.
• 誤：There is three books on the desk. → 正：There are three books on the desk.
• 誤：There are some water in the bottle. → 正：There is some water in the bottle.
• 誤：Is there any pencils on the desk? → 正：Are there any pencils on the desk?
• 誤：How many milk is there? → 正：How much milk is there?

成績が上がらない場合の誤答診断

• is/areを逆にする：名詞の部分を囲み、単数・複数・不可算の3分類をする。
• 否定文でsomeを残す：肯定／否定の2文を並べ、some→anyの基本変化をチェックする。
• How many / How muchを混同：water・rice・milkとbooks・students・chairsを分類して英作文する。
• There isとIt isを混同：新しい存在を伝えるのか、分かっているものの状態・場所を伝えるのか日本語で説明する。
• 英作文で語順が崩れる：There＋be動詞＋名詞＋場所という骨組みを先に書く。

学校の定期テスト7日前からの学習計画

1. 7日前：学校の試験範囲を確認し、単数・複数・不可算名詞を分類する。
2. 6日前：is/areの空所補充を毎日10問。
3. 5日前：肯定・否定・疑問の3文セットを5組作る。
4. 4日前：some/anyを使う例文と例外を整理する。
5. 3日前：How many / How muchを使い、数・量を質問する文を各5問作る。
6. 2日前：36問のうち苦手な問題を日本語から再現する。
7. 前日：前日に間違えた文を白紙で再テストし、名詞の数を説明する。

保護者が確認したい3つの質問

『There are some books.のbooksは何個？』『There is some water.のwaterは数えられる？』『How manyとHow muchは何が違う？』の3つを確認してください。単語暗記だけを増やしても、数えられる名詞と数えられない名詞の区別ができないままでは、同じ形の誤答が繰り返されます。

よくある質問

Q. There isは必ず『そこに』と訳しますか？ A. いいえ。存在構文のthereは基本的に場所を直接示す副詞ではありません。どこにあるかはnear the schoolなどの別の語句で示すことが多いです。

Q. 疑問文ではsomeを使えませんか？ A. 一般的な有無を尋ねる疑問文はanyを使うのが基本です。ただし、勧誘・依頼などの文ではsomeが自然になることがあります。

Q. There is a lot of …は常にisですか？ A. いいえ。There is a lot of snow.とThere are a lot of trees.のように名詞の可算性・数で変わります。

まとめ：存在を表す文は名詞の数と可算性が最優先

There is / There areで点を伸ばすためには、存在するものが単数・複数・不可算のどれかを判断し、否定文・疑問文・数や量の表現を英作文で再現できるようにします。まず36問で間違い方を特定し、同じ形式ではなく語句を入れ替えて反復しましょう。学校の授業が先に進んでいても、現在形の基本文型として定着させる価値がある単元です。
