1|A Five-Minute Book Talk
Last spring, Mei noticed that many students walked past the school library without going inside. She wanted to know why. Some classmates said that they were too busy, while others thought that the library was a place only for serious readers.
Mei and her friends decided to start a five-minute book talk during lunch. Each student could introduce a book in just one minute. People did not have to finish the book or answer difficult questions. They only needed to explain what made them curious about it.
At the first meeting, only six students came. However, more students joined after hearing their friends talk about interesting stories. Three weeks later, over twenty students were attending the event. Some students even began borrowing books that they had never considered reading before.
Mei learned that a small change could make a familiar place feel different. She plans to keep the talks short so that students can join without giving up much of their lunch break.

2|A Better Way to Remember Words
Riku was preparing for an English test. He copied the same list of twenty words every evening, but he still forgot many of them the next morning. His sister suggested a different method.
First, Riku looked at each word and tried to remember its meaning without checking the answer. Next, he wrote a short sentence using the word. He tested himself again the following day and put the difficult words in a separate list.
After a week, he realized that some words were easier to remember when he used them in sentences. He also discovered that he often confused words with similar spellings. He did not stop copying words completely, but he spent more time checking what he could recall without looking.
Riku’s goal was not simply to fill pages with writing. He wanted to use the words when reading and speaking English.

- 17 What did he do with difficult words?
- 18 What did he discover about similar spellings?
- 19 Translate ‘what he could recall without looking’ into Japanese.

- 16 He tried to recall its meaning without checking and wrote a short sentence using it.:第2段落。
- 17 He put them in a separate list.:
- 18 He often confused words with similar spellings.:

- 語句の言い換え:without going inside→did not enter、recall→rememberのような言い換えを見つける。
Read
