The largest group chose science books.なら正確ですが、Most students chose science books.

How many students answered?ならForty students.で人数を答え、Does this represent everyone?ならNo, we only asked one class.

In an imaginary class, forty students answered a survey about the books they most enjoyed reading. Sixteen chose science books, fourteen chose mystery stories, and ten chose books about sports. Science books were the largest group, but they did not receive more than half of the votes. The group asked only this one class. It did not measure reading time, the number of books each person finished, or what students in other classes preferred. Before suggesting new library purchases, the class wanted to ask a larger group of students.

  1. 1. How many students answered the survey?
  2. 2. How many chose science books?
  3. 3. How many chose mystery stories?
  4. 4. How many chose books about sports?
  5. 5. What percentage chose science books?
  6. 6. Did a majority choose science books?
  7. 7. Can the survey tell us the preferences of the whole school?
  8. 8. What should the group do before recommending more books?

Hello. Our research question was which books students liked most. In our imaginary class survey, forty students answered. Sixteen selected science books, fourteen selected mysteries, and ten selected sports books. Science was the largest group, but only forty percent chose it. We cannot say that most students in the whole school prefer science books because we asked only one class. Next, we would like to ask students from other classes.

Thirty students in an imaginary group answered a question about their usual way to school. Eighteen walked, seven used trains, and five used buses. Walking was chosen by sixty percent of the group, so it was a majority choice. However, the group did not ask how long each journey took or whether students felt safe on their routes. A student suggested that all walking routes were safe because many students walked. The teacher explained that popularity does not prove safety. The group planned to ask questions about travel time and traffic conditions.

  1. 9. How many students answered the question?
  2. 10. How many walked?
  3. 11. How many used trains?
  4. 12. How many used buses?
  5. 13. What percentage walked?
  6. 14. Was walking a majority choice in this group?

  1. Thirty. / 30人。
  2. Eighteen. /
  3. Seven. /
  4. Five. /
  5. Sixty percent. / 18÷30×100=60%。
  6. Yes. Sixty percent is more than half. /
  7. No. The survey did not measure route safety. /
  8. How safe are the routes students use? /

Our topic is how students travel to school. In this imaginary survey, thirty students answered. Eighteen walked, seven used trains, and five took buses. Sixty percent walked, so walking was the majority choice. However, these figures do not tell us whether the routes are safe. Before recommending any changes, we should ask students how long their journeys take and whether they feel safe.

For an imaginary science project, twelve bean plants were divided into two groups. Each group had six plants, the same type of soil, and the same amount of water. Group A received more sunlight near a window, while Group B received less sunlight. After two weeks, the average height of plants in Group A was twelve centimeters. The average in Group B was nine centimeters. The students thought sunlight might have helped, but they had not measured temperature or tested enough plants to prove a single cause. They planned a second experiment with more plants and better temperature records.

  1. 17. How many plants did the project include?
  2. 18. How many plants were in each group?
  3. 19. Which group received more sunlight?

  7. Three centimeters. / 12−9=3cm。
  8. No. They had not measured temperature and had tested only a few plants. /

We investigated how sunlight might affect bean plants. We used twelve plants in two groups and gave them the same soil and water. After two weeks, Group A averaged twelve centimeters, while Group B averaged nine. The difference was three centimeters. This result suggests sunlight may matter, but it does not prove that sunlight was the only cause. A larger test should measure temperature as well.

Twenty-five students answered an imaginary survey asking which change they most wanted in their school library. Twelve wanted a quieter study area, eight wanted larger desks, and five wanted longer opening hours. The quiet area was the most popular answer, but twelve out of twenty-five is forty-eight percent, not a majority. Some students said the survey proved everyone wanted a quiet room. Others pointed out that students could use the library for different reasons. The group decided to ask when students used the library and whether they wanted to study or borrow books.

  8. When students use the library and why they visit it.

We studied what students wanted to change in the school library. Our imaginary survey had twenty-five answers. Twelve students wanted a quieter area, eight wanted larger desks, and five wanted longer opening hours. A quiet area was the most common choice, but it received only forty-eight percent of the votes. We should ask more students and find out why they use the library before making a final proposal.
