A group wanted to guide a small rolling robot across a table. Its first plan had four steps: move forward for three seconds, turn right, move forward for two more seconds, and stop. At first, the robot stopped after turning right. The students checked their written steps and noticed that the stop command appeared before the second movement. They moved the command to the end and tested the same route again. This time, the robot completed both movements. The students explained that changing the order of commands had changed the result. They also recorded that they had tested the revised program only once. They planned to repeat the trial three times to see whether the result was consistent.
- How many steps were in the first plan?
- How long was the first forward movement?
- Which direction did the robot turn?
- How long was the second forward movement supposed to last?
- Why did the robot stop early?
- What change did the students make?
- How many times had the revised program been tested?
- Why would they repeat it three times?
Two students designed a simple rule for a virtual garden. If the temperature was below ten degrees Celsius, the screen would show the message ‘Bring a warm jacket.’ Otherwise, it would show ‘A light jacket may be enough.’ They tested the rule at eight, ten, and twelve degrees. The warm-jacket message appeared at eight. At ten and twelve, the second message appeared. One student thought ten degrees should have produced the first message. Her partner explained that ‘below ten’ means less than ten, not ten or less. They agreed to change the rule only if the goal was to include ten degrees in the colder group. Their report gave both the condition and the result so that readers could check the logic.
- What is the temperature threshold?
- Which message appears at eight degrees?
- Which message appears at ten degrees?
- Does ‘below ten’ include ten?
- Which English phrase includes ten?
- What happens at twelve degrees?
- When should the students change the rule?
- Why did they record the condition and result?
A student group wanted to make a small model bridge with a 3D printer. The model had to fit on a square base that was twelve centimeters wide. The students first designed a bridge fourteen centimeters wide. The design looked good on the screen, but it did not meet the size limit. One student suggested reducing the width by three centimeters. The new width would be eleven centimeters, so the model could fit on the base. Before printing, they also checked the height and the amount of material needed. The group had not tested whether the bridge could hold a heavy object, so it avoided calling the model strong. Instead, the students wrote that the design met the size requirements and needed further testing for strength.
- What was the base’s maximum width?
- How wide was the first design?
- Did the first design meet the size limit?
- How much did the group propose to reduce the width?
- What was the new width?
- What else did they check before printing?
- Had the group tested the model’s strength?
- What did they conclude instead of calling it strong?
A class asked twenty-four students what kind of digital project they preferred. Nine chose making a model building, eight chose programming a moving object, and seven chose designing a simple game. The class planned to offer two activities in the next lesson. One student said that model building must be the best way to learn programming because it was the most popular choice. Another student disagreed. The survey showed preferences, not how much students learned. The students had not given any tests before or after the projects. They decided to let students try different tasks and compare their work later. Their final poster used the heading ‘Preferences of Twenty-Four Students’ instead of ‘The Most Effective Learning Method.’ The group wanted the title to reflect the information it had actually collected.
- How many students were surveyed?
- How many chose model buildings?
- How many chose programming a moving object?
- How many chose designing a game?
- How many activities did the class plan to offer?
- What did the survey actually measure?
- Had learning improvement been measured?
- Why was the final poster title changed?
